OK, so I reinstalled everything in the cougar: Torsen LSD, Tranny, Flywheel, Clutch and everything is working with each other except when I put it in Reverse or Second gear... it grinds and doesn't want to stay in gear (like reverse, when I let the clutch out a little you can feel the gears hitting each other and you can see the shifter get push into neutral) I thought it was the cc.com short throw shifter but I replaced it with the stock one and it's doing the same thing.
I don't belive the linkage is different between the 99 and 02 but this has to be the problem. I'm soo pissed  after spending so much time and money and something this little is keeping me from driving it!

Does anyone might know what the problem is?? I went to the ford dealership and told them what has been done to the car and what the problem is but they want to take a look at it... yeah f.u.c.k.ing right, I'm NOT letting those jack off's touch my car.

HELP!
Thanks guys...

okay, i had this problem with just 3rd gear when i installed my Quaife and put the tranny in the car.

except that the quaife had nothing to do with it.

take the shift tower off and turn it over, you should see a little pin that is connected to the thins that the shifter cables attach to.......now that pin moves between 6 little "gates." (1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th, and reverse should have a little knob on the "gate"

look at the gates, now see if the little things are straight. if not, the peg will not move all the way into its gear section. i noticed when the peg was in the third gear spot, it was only going halfway up the little section when i moved the linkage with my hand. so i took a screw driver, and bent the left side piece (the bent side, which is why i had trouble getting into first gear too) straight. and then i moved the linkage again and the little peg would go all the way into every gear slot.

remove the tranny mount, then take off the shift tower and investigate. shouldnt take more than an hour.

if that doesnt fix anything, im stumped. i have to go again, tho, ill draw a pic for you later in paint if you dont understand my explanation

hope this helps!

I figured it had to do with the shift tower/linkage... I still have the one from my 99, should I just swap it in? or I'd fork over some cash for the Focus SVT uprated shift tower.
Thank you for your help, and yes a picture would help a TON.

Thanks again...

if that new tranny of yours is an 01-02, you have the new shift tower.......

heres is a crappy drawing i did, be very very careful when straightening the sections, a small screwdriver (flathead) and a small hammer

hope this helps!

OK, I see what you mean. I'll try to take it apart this weekend. Thanks again and I'll post with results...

Get the tool that centers the shiffter in the car. Thats the only correct way to set the center point... doing it "by eye" is notoriously bad..... Keep an ear out for any sort of binding noise from the trans.... diff bolts are good at working loose if they wernt installed correctly.... and somtimes when they are.

 I worked on it last night and found the problem... the hydraulic hose thats wider then a broom handle was in the way and would get squizzed whenever in 2, 4, or R so it wasn't going all the way in gear. Thats why I had to hold it back because the rubber hose would want to put the shifter out of gear... anyways, it was a little fix but I got to work on my motor mounts and fill them with some 94A shore resin compound. Can you say SOLID mounts

John is your ride working right? The last time I saw you at 1st you still had this problem. Just wondering if you have fixed it since then.
