Has anyone ever build their own intake?

I know that some members have done some sort of dryer hose intakes, and GMK made his own CAI that is sold here on the Fastcougar forum

its just that they are so "pricey"... and some of my friends with other cars have made their own CAI with PVC and such... just wondering it if was worth it to save a buck

well if you can make something you can trust, go for it. but for piece of mind, the price of GMK's is more than fair.

i would think the pvc would conduct less heat and make for a cooler charge. im gonna make my own but buy the piece that goes from the maf to the throttle body. and the maf adapter

theres a kid running around with a neon that has a pvc cai with a k&n filter on the end and i laugh at him each time i see him

of course hes got a fart cannon, massive wing mounted on top of the stock spoiler, unpainted lund hood scoops, a huge "apc" sticker and 14" spinning hub caps, so that could be reason i point & laugh

when pvc gets hot enough it lets off some sort of chemical, which can be harmful to your car. i remember a big debate over at probetalk.com, you could research it there.

if you do, use the abs plastic or whatnot, you don't have to worry about the chemical heating or w/e, plus it's a better insulator, the air won't have the same warming effect as the metal pipes.

pvc is bad....when it heats up the chemikals are very bad, i should smack anyone even suggesting pvc haha...ive seen people use spare exhaust piping for air intakes

Not to mention the max recommended temperature of PVC is about 140 degrees (from McMaster's website).

C2H3Cl is PVC's chemical formula. If infact it would degrade, it would most likely give off Cl, or chlorine in the form of gas, as it would be its most loosley held atom. This would be in small quantities, but would be enough over time to harm the motor. Chlorine will react with the gasoline in the combustion chamber. There, I hope thats all correct...

Not sure where you can find the specs, but it all depends on how low you put the filter. If it is put around the headlight housing, you will have no problem. Even if it gets a little splash of water on the filter, it won't do anything to it. Only if it is submerged in water, and the water is sucked back into the engine.
