So all last week my wheel bearing kept getting LOUDER and LOUDER. So I had to replace it on Saturday.

And that's a small nightmare, make no mistake.

Now I know why they sell the entire hub assembly as a unit, in addition to the bearing alone. I bought the bearing alone, since nowhere in town had a hub assembly in stock. But it was only $24.88, which was pretty awesome for this car. I was expecting to pay WAY more than that.

Regardless, the pressing of the bearing is AWFUL. It is TOTALLY hard to do, and unless you have a bearing press (luckily my dad did) and an impact wrench on an air compressor, you are SCREWED. But we did it.

And while I was in there tearing stuff apart, I decided to replace the tie rod end as well, which was also a very non-Cougar-like $25. And let me tell you - the thing drives like a TOTALLY NEW CAR. I'm so stoked to drive this thing again. I hadn't realized how sloppy the front end had become until now. I think I'm going to replace the other tie rod end as well, just to finish shoring this thing up. And Mike - I'm pretty sure my half-shafts are okay. I suspected them because of all the vibration in the front end, but judging from how tight it is now, they are fine. But thanks for thinking of me.

So my checklist for CougarFest:

1: New TIRES. My current ones are unbearable, and are beginning to show cords.
2. Complete my exhaust. The tips I want are on perpetual back-order at Summit. I may have to settle for something else. But do you know how hard it is to find resonated tips that aren't some kind of Godawful 4" size!?!? I gotta buy a muffler, too; all I have is pre-bent pipe with hangers right now.
3: New struts and Roush springs installed (if it comes down to it, I may just use the old struts; I gotta be dropped by 'Fest...)
4: If the group buy comes through, the Aussie rear sway bar. Can't wait for this one...

The Cougar is almost done, as far as doing what I want to do with it. Unless I get really ambitious with cams or something. Even though it costs me a small fortune every month, the car never gets old. I still just love LOOKING at it. Not to mention driving it. I had it down at my parents' house this weekend, blazing through the curvy country roads of southern Ohio, having a blast. As often as I get mad at it, I simply cannot help but love it.

i wish i still loved my car loke you do. im seriously thinking about dumping it. but i dont have the money for a new cougar. i just had to replace the radiator because it was overheating, my trunk cant open any way, any how, and theres a loud rattle in it i cant stop because i cant open it, and my front bumper is falling apart in every way (today the fog light decided to fall out and drag on the road for a few miles). and i had to cancel my order from kk.com because they never sent out the new one and kept making excuses as to why they hadnt yet. so the one from cc.com should be here in a few weeks, but something will probably happen to it to screw me over more.....

glad to hear your cougar is coming along man!

That wheel bearing noise is unmistakable. I think Slade (and maybe Jeff) have replaced bearings before. I hear it is NOT fun. That's why he told me to go to the dealer and have them replace it under warranty. A $100 deductable is a small price to pay. Glad to hear your car is running better :)

I did car stuff too this weekend, on the Ranger though. New front brakes, rotated the tires and inspected the rear drum brakes, decided those need done too.

I also ran the Seafoam engine cleaner thru the Ranger and it did everything it said. It smoked a little after startup but seems to be running fine. I will use this stuff on the Cougar next, see if it smooths out the idle.

My tie rods seem fine but you have me wondering since I have 93,000 on the orginals. Could you physically tell they were worn out by looking at them?

You can't really tell by looking. If you take the nut off and pop it out of the knuckle, the stud should be REALLY tight. If it is floppy and easy to move around by hand, a new tie rod is in order. New ones are tight and stiff.

Good stuff Andy. Hopefully those bearings last longer than the ussual life expectancy for bearing only replacement. Wanna hear something really really crappy bout those front knuckles? Well I had replaced the entire knuckle/hub assembly on both sides and still had tie rod slop with new ends which basically made my car turn very unpredictably on high speed (read: on and off ramps) turns. Ended up having to scrap a nearly new hub assembly for a used one off that wrecked roush car and another new tie rod end (Ive probably bought like 5 end links total so far :thumbsdn: . So for $25 each tie rod end and over $200 for the new hub assembly I will probably drive this thing off a cliff if they go bad again.

Jeff- did you just add the seafoam to the gas tank or did you do the add-to-oil option? I am really scared to do anything other than adding it to my gas tank so lemme know what you did. Stuff works great in the gas tank though.

Dude, the Seafoam through the brake booster hose is the BIGGITY-BOMB.

That's the only way to get that garbage out of your cylinder heads and UIM. I'm totally gonna do that soon. We should wrangle a spring mod meet, and make it SEAFOAM FOR EVERYBODY!!!

Yeah did it last night to the Cougar, I diconnected the larger of the 2 vacuum lines on top of the UIM and poured it in the hole while it was running. Then shut it off for 5 min. and then took it for a ride, boy did it smoke! Idle does seem better now.
Adding seafoam to the oil scares me though, I'm afraid it will loosen up to much stuuf and I'll get oil leaks. Or what if it thins down the oil so much as to cause bearing damage. I'll just keep it in the intake or gas tank.
