I prefer this set up to the screen in the dash flip out looks a lot nicer in my opinion.

The screen itself is a 7" touchscreen for running my car PC. I got mine off Ebay for about £120 which is about $200

Loads on there to choose from. However, I was advised by my audio shop (who did all the moulding) that 7" widescreen is the biggest you can fit up there.

yeah for some reason the pictures didnt show up how much will a shop charge to do it and what tools did you use.

I paid about £500 which is about $850 (I think). It should have been more, but they didn't actualy do it how I told them too !!! doh!

It was supposed to be recessed under a binnacle, just like the clocks.

are most european guys left handed? i couldnt imagine trying to shift with my left hand... that looks like it would feel so weird

No. Like everywhere else, we are mostly right handed. But if you think about it, if you grew up using your left hand to shift gear, it wouldn't feel strange at all.

being right handed and driving RHD - technically it makes sense to me to keep stronger arm (right) on steering wheel and using the weaker arm to change gears or radio channels. I don't mean this to sound like it does but can anyone write with both hands (dexterity?).

When you take out the vents, wont that mesh up the hear or ac or will it just be directed to the other vents?

NoMoreWalkin4Me

you can close the vents. when you take it out you can rerout the vents. and permanetly close the others. idk thats what i was told

Shagmonkey

That's correct. The center vent pipe was "capped" so now the air just comes out of the remaining two !

Here's a few shots of mine in progress...
This is my first real fiberglass project, so it's been a learning curve, but it's turning out great. That was after the first coat of bondo was put on...it is much, much smoother now. I'll take some updated pics.

The monitor is an Eclipse VM7211 7" widescreen.

When the molding is completed it's going off to TopShop to be wrapped.

No offense, I don't mean to come across as an *ss, but if you don't know what kind of material to use or how to use it, this probably isn't the kind of project you'd want to start with.

The material would be fiberglass or carbon fiber. They are very easy to use, but taking on a project where you have to make a custom mold is not where you want to start, especially if this is your only dash! The stuff is hard to work with and takes practice. It's also very messy and if you get it where you don't want it, too bad, it's staying there!

If you do decide to attempt it anyway (I highly recommend you don't), you would want to make a mold out of styrofoam (you can also use a wire like a coat hanger or wood if needed) then wrap it in aluminum foil or coat it with vaseline. The resin won't stick to either of these materials when it starts to harden. Also, when you mix the resin and hardener, mix in a little less hardener or you will become very frustrated. Fiberglass hardens very quick, if you use less hardener you'll have more time to work with it before it's hard. Then when you are on your final coat, mix a little extra hardener, this will help the other coats dry. When you're done you can either prep it to be painted, or just wrap it in vinyl. If you wrap it, get some 3M Super 77 - NOT 87 OR 90. Spray a coat on the vinyl itself and the dash area where you'll be putting it. Then wrap it tight over the surface using a heat gun to shape it around corners and edges.
