View Full Version : Where To Mount Oil Pressure Sensor???

I need to mount my Autometer electric Oil Pressure gauge. Here can I mount it? It has a huge sending unit that's part of the sensor (size of a golf ball), so it can't be too close to the headers or anything. So here is a pic. (attached) is this a good place or can someone paint on there where it should go?
Thanks,
Nick

Easiest place to locate the oil pressure sender is in the rear bank head, driver's side.
And doing so at that point is okay, you just have to realize that it's not a useful reading. You'll be sampling oil pressure where you tap it- Not where it can do you any good. You should tap aftermarket gauges at the block where the stock oil pressure sender is. Unfortunately, our A/C compressor is right in the way. In order to really know what's going on in the motor, you need to tap at the crank gallery, where it feeds the rod bearings. That's where starvation occurs.
I tapped the head for ease, I also realize it's no more "useful" than an A/F gauge...

Well, it's not entirely non-useful. Perhaps as a warning indicator for the primary Duratec problem of oil starvation leading to bearing failure, yes, but it can still be useful for diagnosing generic problems over time (I.E- noticing that your oil pressure is on average lower than it usually is, etc).

Forget it guys, I figured it out. There is an NPT fitting right next to the factory oil press sensor, I mean like 1cm! It's the same oil gallery, so I taped into hat and I'm remotely locating the sending unit. It will work great, I have a 90 degree fitting comming out of the hole (so I don't run into the A/C compressor) then I'll run the brass line to the sending unit. It's like a hybrid mechanical/electric gauge- mecanical (line with oil) to electric sensor/sending unit to electric gauge. I'll post picks.
Thanks,
Nick

Not exactly the "same" gallery but yes it is usable & much better then using the head gallery "at the end of the line" so-to-speak.
The plug in front of the stock oil sender (to the left) is before the oil filter.
The stock oil sender is after the oil filter.

Yea, it seems to work great. When I had it running last night the gauge seemed accurate. I'm surprised no one else ever figured out to put it there? It worked great for me with a 90 degree fitting and copper line run along the engine and trans then up to the fender-mounted sending unit.
Thanks,
Nick

You must not get over to CEG much.
That's the location listed in the How to which was posted numerous years ago. Also posted countless times since in threads... ;)

Here's an attatched pic. I mounted in the gallery next to the factory oil press sensor. I used the supplied fitting, a pipe fitting and a 90 degree fitting. Then ran copper line to the sending unit mounted to the fender by the battery bracket.

Thanks! I guess theres no way to just mount the sensor there?? Room???

The A/C compressor is in the way so you have to remote mount the sending unit.
