Hi!

I was thinking of replacing my sidemarkers and I was wondering how safe (ie how
visible are they for other drivers) and legal are the dark/smoked sidemarkers...

My Cougar (2000) is silver/gray.

Thanks!

Nick

First off I they would look very nice on your grey cougar. Secondly, you won't have to worry about them being visible or not. They shine plenty bright when you turn your signal on. If they arent bright enough for ya, then go to your local auto store and check out the Sylvania Silverstar bulbs. They now have a bulb that fits the bulb socket for our side markers, and they'll blind you. haha

Welcome to the boards Nicolas!

heres how it would look on your coug:

or if you meant more of a silver frost, here is a pic.

also since side markers are not required as part as the US DOT requirements(nor canadian), if they don't show up very well
you don't have to worry about legality. Now if you put some blue or red or some other wierd colors, then
you may have legality issues.

Thanks! I was also wondering what color do they appear (when in function and with the (usual) amber bulbs) to be. Amber/orange, white or something in between?

That wouldn't surprise me... :)

I have Sylvestars on my other car (Dodge Neon 1995) and even though the headlight covers/lens
is getting somewhat yellowish and doesn't let light pass as well as they used to be they still light
up the road very well...

I just bought myself some Sylvestar bulbs for my headlights (9005 & 9006 if I am not mistaken) for my
Cougar and I'll probably install them tonight.

I should have realized that more than one color might fit the description I had
given... My car color is silver frost...

You've got a point there...

I was looking at other cars to see what color they were and the vast majority of cars don't have them

I think most of the cars I saw with sidemarkers were made by European car makers (European influence?)...

According to Sylvania's (maker of the Sylverstars) website

http://www.sylvania.com/ConsumerProducts/AutomotiveLighting/LampReplacementGuide/

They are 194 (at least that's what they list for a '00 Cougar)

They also mention 194LL but I think this is probably a Sylvania product
(I don't know if this is the lights jlcamp7 was talking about, they are listed
as being

<<194LL Long Life Upgrade: Up to twice the life of the standard lamp>>

Have a nice day!

Nick

PS: Now if I can just get my hands on a set of nice looking foglights...
