Ok well i'll start by saying Hey every one, Here is my problem for about 1 or 2 years now my engine has been making a tapping noise on the side where the belts are closest to the fire wall. In past I've posted questions about what i thought was wrong with it. First i thought tensioner then I thought Oil Pump then DanG Suggested the HLA's. Which the more listen to the noise the more i think in might be the HLA's. But that brings me to this question, the tapping doesn't start till the engine gets to normal temp and you can also feel it on the clutch so, do you all think it would be the HLA's. Because the more I think about it if it was the timing chain tensioner the timing would be off and i really haven't had any problems with timing so do you all think it would be HLA's.

i have the same problem. mine is also there as soon as i start my car up when its cold for about 1/2 a second. i've heard it was pre-ignition, HLA's, bad oiling in the rear bank, using too low of octane (cougars take nothing more than 87 stock supposedly, so i dont know where i'd find lower than 87). Someone has to have the answer and a solution to this. luckily my engine has a year and a few more miles until the warranty is up.

been there, done that. obviously i've been around long enough to know to search. do our symptoms sound like the symptoms from that engine?

i had the same problem only ticks when cold, to fix this i went to the local track and took about 7 runs down the 1/4 mile never had the problem again.
