View Full Version : &@$#%$^!! mechanical difficulties

Tonight I joined the "Cougar owners with mechanical issues" club

Fortunately, it was Ol' Ruby the Tempo and not the Cougar (though the Coug is throwing a CEL :( at the moment and I've not had it read yet 'cause the weather has sucked so hard lately). Unfortunately it did it on the way home from work and I had to call a friend for a rescue and a tow truck to get Ol' Ruby home. So despite the predictions of sleet and freezing rain for the morning commute I'll be in Laser Red.

I drove Ol' Ruby home from work and stopped at UDF to get some gas - put in $10 'cause I didn't want to fill it up since the price went up today and I know it'll go down on Monday. Started the car, drove a block to the post office. Mailed my bill payments, and restarted car. Started home. Got about a half mile down the road and she just quit. Only a mile and a half from home.

I press the gas and she doesn't go any faster "why am I slowing down?" I press gas further. "Why is it so quiet?" NO ENGINE RUNNING is why. I coast to the side of the road, shut off everything, and attempt restart. Cranks and cranks and cranks. Nothing else. I hear the fuel pump whine when I turn the key so it's working.

So tomorrow night or whenever I get the chance to look under the hood - what do I look for? Check for spark. What else? Clogged fuel filter? ::sigh::

Lessons learned - always carry a phone charger in the car, don't leave it in the "good" car - always know the number of a tow truck or have a AAA membership - and always wear thick socks, it was cold during the wait.

* Edit evening of 27 Jan *
I was trying to figure out how to turn the key AND watch for spark all by my lonesome when I decided to try to start her one more time... fired right up like nothing was the matter. custom_images/emoticons/shocked.gif Note that I hadn't done anything yet other than pull the hood latch. So I drove her out of the garage (since she was in backwards and it would have been difficult to work right up against the garage door) into the street and turned around, pulled back into the driveway and left her running while I went back in to put down clean newspapers (little bit'o oil leak). And while I was doing that she just stopped again. Headlights still on and not dimming. Just like the key was turned off, I didn't hear any pops or falters or rough idling. So I go out and turn the key, starts right up again. Drive her in. Get out to check clearance, back up a foot, get out to check again, and she dies once more. That's where I left her.

So... she's got fuel and spark, but something is cutting out intermittently. I'm thinking electrical, maybe ignition switch? Any suggestions for stuff under the hood? Remember, it was just sitting there when it died tonight, so it didn't take much vibration. Could it still be an arcing wire? ECU failing? Intermittent makes it down right frustrating.

Thanks again.

Broken timing belt? Or does she have a chain?

My old Chevette blew a timing belt on the freeway, and that's EXACTLY what I experienced.

This is your engine correct?
Andy could be right but I hope he's not. Let's go over some simpler things first.
When I had this happen it was my fuel pump but you said you can hear it pretty well
and it seems to be working. So if you are getting fuel there is no spark or not enough.
It doesn't look like you have DIS so I would check the distributor cap and rotor. This is
what I'm going through right now with my truck. But it ran fine the last time I had it out.

Usually though if the car is running a bad cap and or rotor will not cause it to die out. To me
it sounds like an electrical problem. Especially if you didn't hear any pops and or weird noises
from under the hood when it died. Check for any fraid cut or corroded wires near the distributor.
Also if it has a coil if any wire comes off of that it will not give the engine the proper spark it needs
to run or start. The coil is the yellow thing in this pick of my engine. It will be the same shape on your car.

My brothers car has done that a few times and his fuel filter had frozen cutting off gas supply to the engine. (mostly happens if his car sets out over a period of time in the cold)
He just adds a can of dry gas at each fill up until he has the $$ to fix it.

Gyger and Bennett are probably right.

Depending on where his filter is on his car this could be a problem.
If it's under the hood the heat would keep it from freezing. If it's
under the car it's possible. Mark try starting it a few times then pull
a spark plug. If it reeks of gas then you are missing spark... or timing of.

Another possibility (happened to me on my old tempo). It could be the fuel injector not working. Mine did it a couple time when the temps got really low but as soon as it warmed up it worked fine. Because it uses a single fuel injector it that stops working the engine stops running. To check if it's a fuel problem you can pull off your intake tubing and while someone cranks the car over shine a flashlight inside the throttle body to see if the injector is squirting any fuel. If you see fuel then you know it is an electrical problem. Also you have a PM about Feb. 5th.

Oh, yeah... didn't think about the TBI. Good call, Jason.

Thanks for all the input guys and gals.

Yea, that's my engine Mike, the 2.3 inline four. I'll be sure to check those things out and let you know what I find or don't find. I'm just glad it wasn't on I-270 at 65 mph when the power steering fails - yikes! And I "borrowed" my friend's AAA card during the rescue so the tow only cost me the tip to the driver for getting Ol' Ruby inside the garage.

I just got home so I don't know how much I'll get done tonight, but Saturday definitely if not before.

Oh, and you can now add me to the Cougar list too - driver's side rear brake caliper froze up today on the Coug and I had a heck of a time loosening it up. I will probably be doing rear pads a lot sooner than expected now.

Hey Andy, wanna buy a Tempo? ;)

sounds like a fuel filter to me... sediment from the tank is getting jared by the moving fuel, blocking the oulet, once the car sets, it settles back down and unclogs the line. I have seen this a few times.

On the cougar- you may need a new parking brake cable if the brakes are not releasing. The cable can get cut and then rusts. Jeff and I have both replaced ours- definitely something you can do yourself but it kinda sucks. (if this is the problem-) You have to remove some exhaust shielding to get to the attachment point under the brake handle and sometimes pulling the cord into place can be a pain. Not a big deal though if its a parking cable. You still have warranty no?

You still have warranty no?
:( No. 36 months was up in Feb. 2004. No extended.

Does this sound like the problem? My TSB. (http://www.fastcougar.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=5&threadid=28161&FTVAR_MSGDBTABLE=arc)
