My trunk will not stay open. There's some greasy residue where the end of the support rests inside the car (when the trunk is closed). Should I just buy the replacement supports, or look for another brand. Thanks!

I had my struts replaced 3 times for this when I first got my car. My mom's car is doing the same thing, and she's got a Focus hatch. Think it's just too cold. Wonder what those crazy Canadians do, Matt said the windchill's been like -42 up there, they might have some better ideas. I think it's just too cold for the greasy stuff inside them (the greasy residue on the struts etc. is normal) doesn't work correctly when it's this cold.

AT LEAST YOU CAN GET YOUR TRUNK OPEN. I have not been able to get into mine for 2 days. I think it's got to be the latch, not the spring, because it's clicking, but it won't open even when I'm pulling on it. My windshield washer fluid is frozen, and I have the deicer washer fluid in my trunk, but I can't get at it. Hopefully it will warm up a few degrees soon.

Stay warm! Hope everyone is all set for the Blizzard of 05

Edit: WHOOHOO got my trunk open - it popped using the key, but doesn't pop using the fob

How well do you clean off the hatch? I find in the winter is I dont clean the hatch off well - especially ice under the spolier - then my hatch won't stay up. As long as it's clean, you shouldn't have a problem. I haven't with either of my 2 cougars.
The effectiveness of the struts is reduced in the cold weather - that is for sure.

Anyways, if the struts aren't effective even though your hatch is clean or your are like me and are too lazy to clean the hatch off - look for threads in the exterior cosmetic section about replacement struts for people who have aftermarket spoilers (ie, park benches, 747 wings, etc) They have some part numbers for stiffer struts that should work better in the cold. And I imagine they aren't that expensive either...

Blizzard? 6" - 12" for Albany is hardly a blizzard. I wouldn't even call it a major snow storm...

Hope this helps...

The definition of a blizzard has absolutely nothing to do with snowfall accumulations.

It's all to do with the combination of wind and snow.

Officially, the National Weather Service defines a blizzard as large amounts of falling OR blowing snow with winds in excess of 35 mph and visibilities of less than 1/4 of a mile for an extended period of time (greater than 3 hours).

I can't keep the trunk open in the garage! I'm tempted to get a hood prop rod and attach that to the inside of the trunk.

CaraJo-- Congrats on getting your trunk open! Do you remember what your ordered for replacement? The only thing I can find that seems close to what I'm looking for is a lift gate lift cylinder.
