View Full Version : Help me start my 3L...

Alright guys...so Im REALLY looking into this 3.0L swap, and here are my final questions before purchasing the motor. (Found a 99 3.0L Duratec for $750 at a local yard that mainly deals motors...) Will break down the motor and clean internals/new gaskets if necessary.

So keeping in mind its a 99, and I have a 99MTX coug, I mainly just want to start by putting the stock 3L in as my car is my daily driver (with the exception of maybe a lightened flywheel and a new clutch while its all out and accessable)...here I go!

1) I have heard bits and pieces on here about the stock UIM from the 3.0L not fitting under the hood...is this correct? And if it is, would I be able to use my 2.5 UIM so that it would fit?

2) Noticed a lot of 3L guys are using 19# injectors...since my 3L will be dropped in stock, can I keep the stock injectors for the eingine?

3) Noticed also that most conversions are using a new tuned ECU because of their added SVT and performance parts...can I just use the ECU from the vehicle of my new engine since its in its stock form?

4) I realise that the 2.5 coug alternator can be adapted to the 3L block...but can I also use the 3L alternator to avoid the touble with the coug alternator? (as mine has been giving me trouble lately...#2 here I come)

5) I know that the 01+ motors need a custom electric water pump job...am I correct to assume that the 99 3L water pump is belt driven like our current 2.5?

6) Will any alterations need to be made to my injection system (return/returnless) as I do not fully understand the injection/fuel system (trust me...have read a lot, just dont fully understand)?

7) Will an exhaust system (dual system off of CC) bolt up to the new 3L? What alterations if any need to be made to make it bolt up?

So this is it for now...as you can see I just want to swap to a better motor, in more or less of a stock form. Performance mods can/will be made later when I have some more money to spend. So for now Im just looking to drop in a operational 3L, new exhaust for it, and tranny upgrade since the tranny is a little less accessable than the rest. I just watnt to make this work for now, and mod later. Any answers would be MUCH appreciated guys...I think Im asking simple questions for you as you guys seem to be swap gods. REALLY looking to do this swap as the winter fades...and would appreciate any answers you could lend.

-CaleYou have things backwards ... the 99 will need an electric water pump if you want to drop it straight in. Otherwise, you will need to follow the hybrid build guide and fill some holes, grind off an ear on the block and use your 2.5L heads because they have the cam driven water pump. If I where you, I wouldn't be so concerned about how to cut corners. Either save up and do it properly or don't bother. I suggest you reread the FAQ's in this section a few more times ;)

Okay, so lets assume Im using an 01+ motor then...could you answer my questions about everything else but the water pump?

1. You will have a lot more issues then just hood clearance trying to run the 3L manifolds. Well hashed out. Do a search.

2. No. 17lb injector will support maybe 4000rpm. Again well hashed out. Do a search.

3. No. New engine size means new tuning required. Even the stock tune on stock engine is far from optimal. Well hashed out.

4. No. Doesn't fit using 3L mounting bracket. Well hashed out.

5. No. 01+ has cam driven W/P. Well hashed out.

6. No. Swap over your stock fuel rail, LIM, & UIM. WELL HASHED OUT. This also relates to question #1 which is well hashed out.

7. Yes. It's the same chassis isn't it. Everything fits and it's been well hashed out.

WELL as you can see you haven't done any research at all into this project. Most every question you asked is answered in the sticky posts or 3L swap pages listed in them.

Dont be mean now...I did a lot of searching, and almost all came up with no results. The only thing I dont understand is why, with a bone stock 3L I cant keep the injectors and ECU from the original 3L...they operated the engine before, and Im not really changing any parts, so why would it only support up to 4k RPM? Sorry...I just dont understand that, and neither does my tuner friend (and please dont go insulting my friend...hes done over eight swaps and just doesnt understand this either.)

Taurus 3L comes with 24 lb/hr injectors. You cannot and will not use the Taurus PCM. You will use the PCM in your Cougar, as well as the wiring harness from your 2.5L engine.
