hi,
I'm thinking about buying a cougar, probably a '99 with a v6 manual, does anyone have any suggestions of what i should look for when i buy the car(signs of abuse or trouble maybe)? I heard these cars give off a lot of problems, especially with the fuel pumps and cams. Any input would be a great help. thnx.

trouble with the cams??? that's a new one on me. the biggest problems have been fuel pumps, sunroofs, altenators, and all the normal problems all cars get over time. just try to get the newest one you can find with the lowest mileage and you should be alright.

As rista mentioned the major problems are usually alternators, fuel pumps and sunroofs but your probably not going to be able to tell if they are bad or will go bad when your buying the car. Just hope you get lucky. If you can afford it you would be better off looking for an 01-02 if you have your heart set on the Cougar because they are newer.

i dont have the money to spend on an 01, and definately dont want a dealership car either. i was reading costumer reviews on various sites, and most praise for handling and styling, but 75% of them say that the car has thousands of little problems and recalls that put it into the shop on a monthly basis. that's what's really throwing me off about this car. they also have a hard time trying to get dealer to honor warranty and recalls. and then to make matters worse, there are the rest of the reviews that say they never had a single problem. so i can't decide if this is a car that i want to buy, because of these horrible reliability reviews.

Lots of the stuff is little things that are very simple and easy to fix. The only major problems I hear about are fuel pumps and those stinkin sun roofs (No problems with my '02, personally). If you want a feel for the car's reliability, check out this (http://fastcougar.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=3&threadid=113747) thread.

and not only that......people have more of a tendancy to complain than to praise, never forget that when reading reviews.
