well for this project i just need a few things cleared up. first of all i am redoing my headliner becuase there is a cigarette burn hole in it. and when i redo it i was thinking of going with out the sunvisors. if i want to do this do i need to get a new headliner all together or can i just take the visors off and the mounting pieces off and just fabric over the exsisting holes them???? Secondly when i go to paint my interior should i sand off the texture that is already on the pillars and rear pillars or leave it on?? and if i do sand it all the way off which grit should i use?? and if i decide to leave the texture on the pillars what grit should i use to sand it down to be ready for paint???? i might decide to leave the sun visors on and if i do leave them on will a fabric dye work good enough to color them so i don't have to have new fabric sewn back on??? if so which fabric dye(spray can type) should i use.
thanks for any info that is given...

personally i would love to see your car without sunvisors, you should be able to to just lay new cloth over the existing headliner, or if you choose to, attempt to remove the old cloth and just put a piece of cardboard or whatever where the hole was then recover. i did this to a ranger to remove the overhead light and it looked great.
the interior trim. i'd remove the texture by sanding with some 120 grit then work you way up to 600 to make it nice and smooth, make sure to sand after primer and wetsand the clear. that will make it look like glass with a mirror finish. otherwise to keep the texture you can use some 600+ grit or steel wool and lightly scuff the surface. then primer paint etc.
good luck.
You can lay new headliner material over the existing headliner, it will be thicker obviously, but it won't hurt anything. That is exactly what I did, just used spray adheisive and new material, and covered the headliner.
As far as the pillars, I wouldn't sand anything. Go get some SEM Vinyl dye, works just like spray paint. Take all your pillars and clean them with laquer thinner, allow to dry, then use many thin coats of SEM Vinyl dye. It will not flake, chip, or scratch. It will look like the pillar was always whatever color your choose. If you are going black, I recommend the landeu black. It is not flat, but it is not shiney...it looks stock.

thanks for the info. i will probably do what fett said and just cover the existing material. And FETT where can i get the SEM vinyl dye??? it seems that the vinyl dye is the quickest and easier route to take... and also do they make a silver or like metallic gray in the SEM vinyl dye??? i don't really want to do a crazy outlandish color scheme. my car is black and i am doing my headliner blackand the vinyl stuff will be a silver or metallic grey like i stated above.
thanks for the info guys. the more info the better so keep it coming guys..

this may be a dumb question but can someone define wetsand... is it exactly what it means like sandpaper with a wet surface? or is there more to it? what grain sand paper do you use... again I am learning here so any help would be fantastic.

Anytime you paint plastic, you need to use an adhesion promoter to ensure the paint sticks to the plastic. I've seen too many times where someone used regular paint, even with sanding and priming properly, and it began to flake off after six months or a year. I would go to a paint supply place and ask for a plastic adhesion promoter.
I don't know if this is true with the vinyl dye.
Krylon has started making the Fusion spraypaint that is specifically for plastic, and has a plasticiser/adhesion promoter mixed with the paint. I haven't talked to anyone who has tried it, but theoretically, it should work fine, but you wouldn't want to use primer with it, since that would act as a barrier between the plastic and the paint.

my $.02 is that everyone should put down the rattlecans... it will look a bazillion times better if you have it painted at an autobody spray booth where they have some serious painting tools :)

That's my opinion, too. In fact, the only reason I know anything about paint is because a good friend of mine works in a body shop as a professional painter, and he has a spray booth in his workshop, as well. He's doing all my painting for me, interior and exterior. If you can afford it (and it's worth it!) go with a pro.

when i sand the interior parts should i sand the texture all the way off and make it smooth or should i just rough the surface up or what?????? as of right now im going with high temp engine paint. a few of my friends have use it and it turned out pretty damn PERFECT. hey used 2 coats primer, 3 coats paint, and 2 coats clear. but all i need to know is how to sand the surface. oh and also what grit should on i use when doing this????

if ur actually gunna do i do it right like i did i have rattle canned a lot of things and if u have patience it comes out fine. Use 225 Grit and sand it how u want if u wanna make it smooth sand it till the bumps r gone then use a finer grit like 800 or higher i used like a 1000 anyway sand then till there r no and i mean no rough spots. then i used acteone or u can use plastic adhesion promoter or w/e u want to clean it good then i primed onece with a light coat never glob paint on it comes out liek [censored] otherwise. then do a few more evey 30 mine till the piece is coated fully. then let dry to the touch usually ove rnight. then paint with a light coat and continuasly do this for one whole day then let dry over night. then cearcoat it be careful not to drip so use very light coats i did over 10 coat then i let dry for 2 days and then i wet snaded it with 100 grit and polished it and it looks insanely shiney. o yea and i used rustolem primer, and flat white enamel for my painting and then rustolem ultra clear coat and then 3 m sand paper hope this helps

First of all as far as the sanding goes, just find crispy's how to and it will tell you everything you need to know.
The only problem I had is the clear had a yellow tint. It did chip over time, but it looked great and I think it will chip no matter how long you let it dry and no matter what paint you use, if it is an every day driver. However, I only have two small chips in mine. There are pic in my sig. of mine painted white.
As far as the pillars, I did use fusion....it worked great and is a hell of a lot easier than sanding.
The only reason I wouldn't use it on my dash is because you can't use clear coat.

thanks for the info. i am probably gonna do this when i have free time. not sure when that will be but soon. although i have still not decided which color to do. i am going to take my sun visors out completely and the headliner will be black.(by the way the whole entire top half of my interior is tan) i am going to paint the whole top half of the interior. but i am not sure what color. my dash and carpet are already blackwith a little bit of grey in them. i think i was just goin to go with somthing suttle like a metallic silver or somthing like that. so if i decide to get rid of it down the road it won't have a crazy odd color in it. that will probably decrease the value of the car quite a bit won't it??? So my question is what color should i do???? remember i do want something some what unique but still suttle. so how about it whats all of your opnions???? when takeing this interior out how should i do it and how easy does it come out???? remember its the whole entire top half of the interior from the a pillars and the little light piece in the headliner at the front all the way to the pieces that line the back hatch..also how do u think this will look when finished???
thanks,
justin

they come out pretty easy, but be carful not to break the plastic clips. Use Krylon fusions, you will also have take some pieces off the hatch, it is all pretty easy...link to pic of my painted pillars. (http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/362822/4)
The fusion is nice because you just clean then paint and it still show the same texture.
AS far as the headliner...I can't help ya becuase I did not do mine yet.
Also you will have to do the dome part. First take out the light, then you will have some screws. I also took out my warning lights, so I didn't have to tape them off.
