So, a few houses down from me sits a canary yellow Honda S2000. I went to high school with the owner's son, and . . . yeah. Lets just say I'm not real fond of the whole family. The owner works for a stealership, so I'm sure this is just his demo, but he lets the kiddies drive the car.
Today I was on my way out of town when I noticed the S2000 with his nose buried in my ass. I prayed for light traffic, and was divinely rewarded. As we reached highway speed, I quickly pulled out and overtook the slow car in front of me. The S2000 follwed, but instead of dropping back in line behind me, tried to pass me. Throttle buried, he couldn't even pull on me as we quickly raced towards 90.
I hit the brakes and turned on to a much more desolate stretch of road that also happens to take me to where I need to go each day, and it was on. He pulled a little on me through third gear, enough to justify pulling in to the other lane to try to pass me. Fourth came and no change, and then I slowly started to creep ahead as we hit 135+. The kid finally dropped in behind me and backed way off as we slowed down to "just" 90 MPH. Knowing he wouldn't give up so easily, I kept watching for him to run me again, but he didn't . . . until I stopped watching. He got a huge rolling jump on me this time, I got on the gas again and we ran the rest of the long, open road, with me eventually slowly starting to reel him in.
I think the best part about the story was this - after our run, we both turned off on to another two-lane highway that lead through a small town. I followed him through the town, and after leaving the town, the road opens up to four lanes. The S2000 and I were stuck behind a large, slow moving Suburban. When the road opened up to two lanes, with a red light conveniently waiting two high-performance vehicles to drag off the line. But he wouldn't take the bait . . . he pulled alongside the Suburban, but didn't pass it so we could have a clean run. I pulled by him after the light changed, we flashed thumbs up to each other, and both went our seperate ways. Somehow I don't think this is the last time we'll be running though . . . hopefully next time I'll have the car tuned.
