After seeing some neon angel eyes, my sons and I decided to figure out a way to do it ourselves cheaply. We ended up spending about $30 to do them and wrote these instructions along with pics showing how, . This is how they end up: http://www.amesthundercats.com/GeneralImages/EyeMod/TcatEyes.jpg linky linky (http://www.amesthundercats.com/HeadlightMod.html)

Quick question, did you just pry the headlamps apart and then just push em back together? I have heard of people doing that

I removed the headlights from the car, removed the clips around the outside edges, removed the rubber seal, and then gently pryed the lights apart. If you have someone who can help you, they say a blowdryer will help soften the sealant while you pry. To reassemble you do these steps in reverse, making sure the mask is aligned before you push the two halves back together.

What I used to tint the neons to a better red came from a craft store and was called "Glass Paint" made by "Delta". I ended up giveing mine two coats of a mixture of 4 parts red to 1 part black. Play with the mix a little to get to the tint you want. It will dry a little lighter than you think. Make sure you give them several hours to dry as any mark on the tint is very noticable, especially at night. :)

The red ones took more time because I tinted them darker, the green are the brightest, the blue probably draw the most attention.

Those look awesome guys, I had one question, do they make cold cathode fans with a super white neon?? I have looked everywhere and can't find anything. I want to be able to drive around with my eyes on whenever my headlights are on, and not get harassed by cops. I have begun to make some with leds and the window wands, but I want mine as bright as yours.

mmm, look amazing, i think the blue looks the best because they seem the brightest and will probably be more of an attention grabber but personally id like to install the red on my car. After taking apart my headlights to re silicon everyint because moisture was getting inside them i swore to never open them up again, but i think i might have to now. THANKS guys. lol, but awesome tutorial none-the-less

Sorry you guys there is no white cold cathode rings out their. I know because I was looking for them when I did this mod about a month ago on my 01/02 headlights. Yeah circuit city/nor best buy doesn't carry them. Now CompUSA does, however they are $20 a piece, and what is the point of that when you can get the same exact thing on eBay for $3 a piece plus shipping. Trust me this mod is totally worth it, but you must have patience. I will post pics as soon as I get my film developed and scanned.

They do not make white cathodes, but they do make UV. UltraViolet. They look like the purple HIDS on BMWs. This is the closest you are going to get with white

Actually, they do make white cold cathodes :) but I've never seen one that wasn't a straight tube :( i.e. no fan rings that I've seen yet.

well if they dont make white then how is it that james has them?
LinkMan
11-04-2004, 12:20 PM
Maybe 'cause Jame's aren't cold cathode rings? I don't know what kind of tubes Demon Eyes are made from, I've never seen a set of Demon Eyes in person.
I do know that when I've googled for white cold cathodes I have no problem finding things like 6 inch and 12 inch straight tubes, but I've yet to see a fan ring. I would think they exist, seeing as how white straight ones exist and other colors of rings exist, but I haven't seen them.
White is the only color that would go with my scheme and not get me pulled over. So if you find any, please post.

I wonder if anyone has tried to use the glass paint used to tint these neon tubes to make the nhvac control a different color.
if you took the green stuff of and put a layer of glass paint instead wouldnt that work??

i thought i heard that the heat from the lights would melt the plastic trim plate thing...(the piece people paint to match car colour)..
and i have also heard that the cups deflect the light output so as to not blind oncoming drivers..
i believe i will be trying this mod again to my lights but just the highs..since i hardly ever drive with them on anyway..

Everyone said it would, but we have been running ours for 8-9 months without a problem. aLbinoChicken works second shift, so there isn't a day without his headlights on for at least an hour.

I'm doing my car in Black and Red, but I don't think I want to take the chance of the legal implications of putting the red ones on, and it figures that they are out of stock on the white....

From what the company told me they will not be getting white again. I have done so many searches on the web and cannot find anybody else that has white, I have even tried contacting some companys but nobody has responded. So is there anybody that visits or is a part of a computer modding board that will post something calling for all white 80mm cold cathode fans? I WANT WHITE, to be legal.

Anyone know how to apply the paint to tint them red. Do you dip them it or apply with a brush and what kind of a brush. If you apply with a brush how do you do it so you wond get the brush strokes in them. Thanks

I brushed the tint on in 2 coats. I let the first one dry for about 3 hours before applying the second. Also, you can mix the colors of tint to get different shades. I wanted a darker red and mixed a little black tint in with the red to get the right color.
