the car is jerky on starts like its not getting fuel or something, while driving it sounds hesitent sort of like its misfiring or lack of fuel. could this be because of a bad filter or fuel pump. as far as i know the fuel filter has not been changed. car has 82,000 miles on it. can anyone confirm this is what it is??

Fuel filter is cheap. start there.
Try the easy answer (LostRacer's) first- Fuel filters should be replaced annually.
If you have a returnless Cougar (See FAQ if you don't know), then you may be having fuel pump or sender circuit issues if the filter does not seem to solve the problem. Others have reported similar problems but with different causes- A search will help.
