Well yesterday I finished installing my new sony head unit. I got the 8805x, which is the one with the active black fold down display. I bought it despite all the people who told me not to because I myself have never had a problem with Sony anything. So far I absolutely love this head unit, not only is it amazingly cool but I have never heard a better sounding. I know that any head unit is a step up from stock but words do not describe the difference this unit makes. I thank most of it to the Sony's processing that it offers. Not only does it offer complete custom 7 parameter eq settings but it also offers separate controls for bass, treble, sub, etc. Did i mention its DSO settings which make the speakers sound like they are mounted higher on the doors, making sound clearer. Oh and it also has this loud mode which makes some serious bass. Plus all these things can be combined at once to make an amazing sound. I have had several people in my car since the install and they cant believe the difference. It sounds like a whole new system. Oh and this is all with my STOCK speakers. Thats right, you will never believe the amazing sound I am getting out of those little paper cones. 2 of my friends complimented me on my new subs (I don't have subs for those of you keeping track). The bass in this car rilly makes new subs almost un necessary.
I don't care what you all have to say about sony, I have never heard a better sounding head unit, and I've heard several. This unit is also much better built then previous sony units, the folding mechanism is strong and the entire construction is with top notch materials. The skipping on the disk rilly isn't as bad as Sony's in the past, it only skips when I go up driveways or speed bumps rilly fast, even then it only skips a beat and its back on track. How this will perform in the long run I cant say but this unit appears to be built just as well as any Alpine unit ive seen. I highly doubt this unit will have any problems for years to come.
Now despite all this I already have my new Infinity Kappas on order (though now I'm not even sure I need them) which will be here saturday. I purchased a bulk pack of Dynamat which I will install in the doors, around the rear speakers and in teh trunk. And despite the amazing sub response from this set up, I still plan on installing my dual 10" subs in my trunk. I cant wait to hear how this all sounds.
In case you were wondering, I did all the install myself, it was rilly easy. I will continue to do all the install work for the speakers and subs, which includes a custom enclosure for the subs. My cost for the unit was $250 shipped plus I had to purchase the mounting kit, antenna adapter, and wiring harness so basically it cost me $280 for this amazing change. I can not stress enough to you all CHANGE YOUR HEAD UNIT BEFORE ALL ELSE, my new kappas would not sound half as good if they were still on that stock unit. For those of you wishing to go a bit cheaper you can get the Sony 7700 unit for around $40 to $50 less which has exactly all the same insides and processing, all u loose is the pretty face. So u know, for 2004 sony is now offering 2 versions of each of their high end units. labeled differently as a 5x ex 8800 vs 8805x or 7700 vs 7705x the difference being that the 00 is with red lights (not the display, I believe all of sony's displays are blue) but the buttons light red vs the 05 which lights up blue (and an amazing blue at that).
I will post pictures of the unit tomorrow, it rilly is a clean looking install. Plus this unit looks amazing at night, all the little blue lights are ecstasy.
If anyone has any questions please pm me, I have been researching head units for some time now and man o man did I make the right choice.
