in reagrds to this previous topic - car getting keyed (http://www.fastcougar.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=49&threadid=100892) - i just claimed this with my insurance company. found out my deductible is only $150 - and that if i dont claim it within 30 days from the incident (dated police report so i cant fudge the date) that my insurance company may not accept the claim, so i did it.

damage has been done to literally 1/2 the car - after work today im going to some shops to get an estimate. my ins co said they have to have someone look at the car as well - even though i dont need to take it to them - i guess they still require someone to see the damage...

i dont know what to do because im like - 1/2 the car getting painted - might as well repaint the whole thing ...
i wanted to wait and get the car repainted all at once - and i especially wanted to wait until i got a body kit and have everything painted at once and thought about going with a different shade of blue with the kit. -- but now b/c of this i dont know if i can wait and get things painted later? should i just have them repaint 1/2 the car? how bad will it look or how hard will it be to match the paint on 1/2 the car? should i see if i can just get the whole car repainted now w/o the body kit?????????

this sucks - i dont know what to do...

If you select a good body shop there should be no problem matching the paint.

How long until you have all of your aftermarket body pieces together? If it's going to be a while, why not just let the insurance company pay for the paint job now, and then repaint it all later when you have what you need? If your insurance doesn't go up much and you can afford the deductible why not...

Ah, just because you're getting the estimates, and collecting the money, doesn't mean you have to spend it "right now". Some insurance companies will simply cut you a check and expect you to take it to the bodyshop (when it suits you best), and pay them. I've filed a number of comprehensive claims with insurance companies and generally get cut a check, and then use that money to not only fix the damage, but go beyond it. ;)

You could always collect the money, and sit on it (granted you've have key marks until then, but oh well). Then when yer ready to paint you've already got X amount saved (from the insurance).

i'm not sure if you do but if you have enough money for the body kit buy it and get it put on then get the whole car painted at once, but if you don't have the money then do what EternalOne said get the estimate, get the check then when you get the kit get it painted.

if i was back home in NY id have some friends just paint it for me with the ins money - but i dont know any place in VA yet

we'll see what happens

My dad just had the same thing happen with his F-150, and this is how it worked for him. He made the claim, almost a year later went and got estimates, the insurance company did their own estimate, and how he has a fresh 2G check in his hands. Plain and simple. You have to claim it within 30 days...but you only have to do osmething about it when you have the time to.
