So, I'm apparently in charge of networking and telecom for the trip. ;)

For this, I'll need to know how many vehicles we will have on our caravan.

Secondly, I'll have to recommend some equipment that everyone will need for their cars. I may have a couple of spare units here and there to help people out if they really need it.

Third, I need to know if anyone has a mini-DV camcorder we can use on the trip. I have a Powerbook with firewire, so I can do on-the-fly video editing for us on the trip.

Now, here's what we have. I have some 802.11b wireless networking equipment, 2 working laptops, and an in-car computer. This plus an antenna I'm buying will let us share a wireless LAN between the cars within a 1000 foot radius. We'll be using this network for a couple of things. In a couple of the cars I'll have USB webcams taking motion video capture and transferring it over network to my laptop. We'll upload our travel video as we're on the road, thanks to my bluetooth enabled phone that'll give us wireless Internet. ;)

We're going to be using two-way FRS/GMRS radios. They MUST be GMRS capable as we'll probably end up using the less-used, longer-range GMRS channels. I have a couple. We will not be using quiet codes, so don't go all out on a radio with them if you can get cheaper and want to budget better. Radios are also good for meet caravaning.

So yeah, that's it so far. I'll handle the geeking out. ;)

Okay. Well, our route is going to be Interstate 80, which takes us through Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois and then Indiana. It's about 2300 miles, and at a calculated speed of approximately 80mph average, it should take us about 30 hours (including stops) to get there.

I'll find out who from SoCal is joining up with us to leave.

You'll really need a heavy foot and a lot of luck, Do me a favor and be very careful guys..

Yes, we're planning on averaging 80mph. There's going to be a lot of open freeway through the middle of nowhere, and we obviously don't plan on exceeding a safe level of speed anywhere there is traffic, but we do have a lot of road to cover and little time to do it. It's not difficult to maintain an average of 80mph in the middle of Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska and Iowa. ;)

And thanks Dad, we're not dumb. We plan on being careful. :)

Having driven thought route six times I can attest to the difficulty of going fast and not getting caught... $760 in fines and stopped once by a Utah state patrol at gun point.. also spent many, many, miles doing the speed limit in my '72 rally green Camaro with a Kansas patrol car following behind me.. be careful..

Ok guys..its gettin closer to D-Day and we're still lacking some solid info.

Devin-I don't see you registered yet  Whats the 411..PM or call me if possible.
Nuty1der- I'm aware of your agenda already.

Are we all on the same page as far as travel times go? Dates?? Leaving and coming back?

Would I be pretty safe to assume a round trip in gas is going to range around $500? Lets be safe all and try to get this done properly and effecient. We're getting too close for anny surprises. Especially for a trip like this.
Final Confirmations would be good right about now.

We need a verified list of attendees, we need to figure out a date and time of departure, and we need to know how many cars so we can divide up the people.

Because of a family reunion/great grandmother's 95th birthday, I will have to fly back and will be unable to caravan with you folks home, so I need to go in a 3-person car on the way out there. It sucks because this means I also have to leave after 1 day. Unless I fly out there, meet up with some other folks, roll with them for a day and meet you guys when you get here.

I'm already printing maps, alternate routes, etc, so you guys will have them for the trip.

Curtis is redbaron01. He usually brings his dad with him who is cool as they come. He's from Empire.

You dork, between you and ov3n. Discussing the only black person at CF when it was at Pigeon Forge. If I am not mistaken, he and his dad were the only ones last year too

Any chance I could join you guys on your way out there? I am presently located in Tucson, AZ, originally from the Bay Area, so I am quite familiar with I-80! :)
