View Full Version : Polished Aluminium Coolant and Power Steering Tanks
ProjectCougar
04-13-2004, 02:14 PM
After several months of prototyping and trying to get the right design down, the two samples have finally arrived and will be test fitted this weekend. Below you will see images of the new complete replacement tanks. These tanks will completely replace the nasty plastic Engine Coolant Tank and Power Steering Tank under the hood.
The images below are the samples we have received at CustomCougars.Com for testing purposes on Project Cougar. Final production release date is scheduled for May 15th, 2004. Selling price on the Pair of Tanks will be $250 + Shipping...
Enjoy the images
Thanks
James

those do look hot, but that's expensive, how many cougs wanna show off their engine to that degree?

I dunno. It would just really clean up the engine bay a lot. I hate seeing all this black & metal and then over to one side are 2 big, white plastic eyesores.
You said these are just the test versions. Are the finals expected to have a nice, clean corner & welds smoothed out? Or will it be like another StreetFlight turbo box that looks like it was hammered from the raw metals itself?
do they leave room if we wanted to use lesaber hinges for a flip open hood? or do we still need to get the WR tanks if we wanna do that mod

These items are flawless in person so they will not be cleaned up... The price is for the pair ONLY and will only be offered as a pair.

now THATS what i'm talkin about!
are those going to be a perminant addition to the cc.com store? or are only a certain number being made? - this just got bumped up to the front of the line for my 'to do next' list. but since im looking at paint work this/next month, i wont be able to order until July-ish

James, this is unreal. At the Mod Meet I hosted last wknd, we discussed how someone needed to get these made and that you were just that person lol. Great products and not a bad price when you think about what you are getting. Gonna look a hella lot cleaner with those!

 thanks Josh... but i guess to rioredcoug, it wasn't so apparent
and CougarSVT... are you kidding?!
Are you aware that there are people on this forum right now, who are trying to fullfil some sick Carbon Fiber fetish by completely encasing themselves in the stuff in their cars... useless stuff like door panels, headliner and trunk trays for $550+!
These polished tanks are definitely worth it... and even more importantly - you wont have that "omg... what have i done" feeling when ya wake up the next morning

I really don't see how $250 for these two tanks is overpriced but thats just me....
I should have prototypes in hand by next weekend, had a small delay in shipping

maybe i'm just being foolish... but what about heatsoak? :cover:
Won't the metal hold the heat that radiates from the engine more than the plastic surfaces would?.
ND4SPD
04-16-2004, 05:33 PM
I think solid metal would... but aluminum has diffrent characteristics that makes it react to heat diffrently... ja? actually never mind - i never took metal materials 101 in school, so i might be wrong...

The plastic would trap more heat than the metal; however, the metal container would be more susceptible to heatsoak than the plastic. So you need to figure out what is hotter: the coolant or the ambient temperature under the hood. If the ambient temperature is greater than that of the coolant, then heatsoak could be a problem with the metal coolant tank.
If you do switch to an aluminum tank, be sure to change your coolant at the specified intervals or even a little sooner. According to Red Line Synthetic Oil, aluminum has a high corrosion potential and the older the coolant gets the more acidic it becomes.

Pictures in the engine bay please!!!!!
P.S. Where can you buy the Weapon R ones????
metal gives off heat faster than plastic
so it would cool off faster

Just saw a Focus SVT today, they come with a nice black cover for the tank...
That'd be nice...
The shiny ones are nice... not for me though, good luck

Not really. If I were going to be childish, I would make up stories about it... I merely said that I wouldn't be buying one now :)
From what I have seen of that company (and through my personal dealings with them when they damaged my car), I do not trust any product they manufacturer, and will never have one on my car especially when it involves engine fluids :ugh:
I just think its too bad that they are the ones making them... because otherwise I would have actually bought a set after you got them in

well ever ones entitled to an opinion.
I for one love what they do and make. At least some one is making stuff for our cars.
There more into competition performance products. And any one whos been around a race track knows parts wear out after severe punishment.
sorry to hear you had problems but we all bought fords.
fix, or , repair, daily.

Will the Coolant bottle have the appropriate water-level sensors? Or will the user be forced to look at that yellow light on their dash?

Oh man and how we hate that light. I am interested on this one too.
Also, will there be a choice in finish to this product or is polished the only finish available? Unfortunately the shiny thing won't work with my car either, I know someone else already mentioned it. Of course, there's always the powder-coat option, but that would make it hella expensive for the overall pair. Looks good otherwise.

Okay, so they'll be available in FOUR DAYS! :)...
What does the new prospective owner of these tanks do about caps (since the OEM versions probably won't fit)?
I WANT TO BUY them...I just need to know if the OEM caps will work, and if not, what caps do I need?
Thanks!

Charles... I wouldn't leave you hanging like that... the tanks will come with new caps... I just got mine this week and will try to get photos later this week... I am just tied up doing alot of other things so until the tanks are ready for public sale, it may take a bit to get them posted.

does anybody know whether this type of metal can be powdercoated? And If so, is that a bad thing? Is buckshot still offering powdercoating services?

it could be powdercoated. a translucent color overtop would look good.

Anything but plastic can be powdercoated IIRC

thank you. I did a search, and buckshot motorsports is still up, so I can only guess he is still powdercoating stuff. I might look into getting these sometime soon.

James,
Are the coolant tanks baffled/chambered to avoid sloshing/foaming of the fluid, like the stock unit?

Did Weapon*R remember to add the overflow tube for the radiator reservoir? Also, is the cap one that holds the appropriate pressure since our cars use the 'coolant reservoir cap' as the actual radiator cap for the cooling system?
Just questions that people should have answers to, as both are vitally important to the operation of your vehicle's cooling system. :) I don't see the overflow tube on the back of the tank in the picture, but then it's difficult to see the back of the tank in that image.
