Street Legal Series Debuts This Week at Heartland Park Topeka

TOPEKA, Kansas – In an effort to promote a safe form of drag racing, Heartland Park Topeka will host the first of 20 street legal events in 2004 this Thursday night at the world-famous HPT quarter mile. Unlike other forms of drag racing, this series is designed specifically for street legal machines only. Drag racing slick tires and open exhaust are not permitted, and cars must go through a simple safety inspection to ensure they are safe to race.

The Heartland Park Topeka Street Legal Series is presented by Topeka sponsors 5th Gear Motorsports and CD Tradepost. Participants must have a valid state-issued license and proof of insurance, and if under the age of 18 must have a waiver signed by parents. A complete set of rules for the Thursday night series can be found online at www.hpt.com.

Gates for the Heartland Park Topeka Street Legal Series open at 5 p.m., with racing scheduled for 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Entry fees are $10 for drivers and $10 for spectators. The HPT series will feature grudge and time-trial racing only, which gives the participant a maximum number of passes down the drag strip.

The Heartland Park Topeka Street Legal program is divided into three sessions – spring, summer, and fall. Each session will conclude with a Street Legal Final. Including each street legal final there are five Thursday night events scheduled for the spring, eight for the summer, and four in the fall.

According to a study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 2001, police listed street racing as a factor in 135 fatal crashes. The total was up from 72 street-racing-related fatalities reported in 2000. Nationwide statistics show that 49 people are injured for every 1,000 who participate in illegal street racing.
