Hey....

my step brother has a 99 5spd cougar with the 2.5 V6.

i've managed to find most of the information needed through searches, but i actually need to post on this one. see if i can't figure it out.

the transmission is broken, and i'm trying to remove it.

everything with the exception of the drivers side axle is off the transmission. do i need to take the CV joint apart to get that off? it damn sure doesnt want to come out of the transmission.

the transmission it'self just wont fit out of the thing. i've got the 2 bolts out of the drivers side of the sub frame, which helped a lot. but it's still not enough. i read on here that one guy removed his. that seems like a LOT of work. it looks like at least the radiator and steering rack is connected to it. if it has to come out, that's fine... i guess that's what im going to do. i just want to make sure that's what has to happen.

so anyway..... my 2 main questions...

drivers side CV joint has to come apart?

and

the entire sub frame has to come off the car?

thanks in advance for any replies.... :)

You are removing the tranny from above or from underneith? If you have it in the air and are dropping it from under the car, then you need to remove the entire subframe. You can do it bu just moving the subframe out of the way, but it is easier to NOT attemp this.

If you are removing it from above, then you need to pull the engine/tranny combo, no?

Either way, the axle should come out of the tranny, you might need an axle puller to assist you.

If u are pulling the tranny its easier to remove it with the engine out the top.

Don't bother with the subframe- Put the sucker on jackstands and pull the entire powertrain out as a unit from the top, like so:

It takes 6.5 hours or so to yank the entire powertrain. Replace what you need on the ground, then pick the whole powertrain back up and set it in the car. You do not need to remove the hood, you do, however, need to pull both halfshafts out. The passenger side is easy- Two bolts on the jackshaft bearing and it slides right out. The driver's side is more difficult, and there are two ways to remove it- The easy way, and the hard way. The hard way is to rig a tool similar to the Ford tool that looks like a gigantic tuning fork at a 90° angle. You hook the CV shaft at the trans casing and pry it out. No trick, just brute force. The easy way it to remove the passenger side halfshaft first, then feed a long, thin screwdriver into the differential and butt it up against the driver's side halfshalf. One swift whack with a hammer will pop the halfshaft's "C" clip and it will come right out.

6.5 hours? you can get that thing out through the bottom in 3 hours. It's been done in my driveway on jackstands. The subframe comes out in 30 minutes. As for the cv axle, I just replaced mine sunday and was having the same problem you are getting it out. Do what DanG said and get something up in there and just kick it as hard as you can, it will pop out.

Just the trans, or the whole powertrain? Anytime I do work for people, I pull the whole powertrain. Easier to do everything then just put it back in. ('Course, at the time I was replacing the engine, too)...

I'm just talking about the trans. If you're replacing the whole engine that's a different story. I'm just saying that since he wants a new tranny, it would probably be easier for him to just take it out the bottom, throw a new one on a jack, jack it right up to the engine and bolt it on.

i hate fords.... :)

the bolt in the shift fork broke right in half.... so that was an easy fix.

went ahead and got a new clutch, since this one has 100k on it.

we got it all installed today.... we were bleeding the clutch, and realized it was leaking fluid from behind the slave cylinder/throw out bearing.

looking at the old slave.... it looks like there it has to seal on the back side. i didn't even notice this before putting it together, or i would have made sure it was on better.

so anyway... is there a trick to putting the slave on?

thanks :)

There's a rubber "O" ring that should have come with the new slave cylinder- You need the "O" ring regardless, so if you didn't get a new one, you have to re-use the old one, with a little black RTV silicone to help it seal.
