hi, im new to NECO and i was just wondering if there were any cheap, small ways to modify the stock 2.5L ATX engine to improve performance (or longevity). Just things that do not necessarily require adding anything (or anything major). i will soon get an intake, exhaust, and headers, but i want to know if there are any modifications that i can make to my current stock engine. :)

id recommend a DMD and tranny cooler to start. Both are fairly affordable.

It stands for a Dual Mass Damper....here is the "book definition"
Used on the latest Mondeo 2.5L Duratec engines, these "Dual Mode Dampers" reduce vibrations at a more than one frequency.
The part looks much like the standard crank damper with a second mass ring presses on the front, hence the dual mode (two dampers).
When installed the final result is really quite amazing. The engine feels smoother and more refined, especially about 4000 RPM where the
secondary mass comes into play. We would recommend this part to anyone who uses the upper part of the rev range on a regular basis.
and wants to help extend their engines longevity. As far as piece of mind goes, if Ford decides to re-engineer a part it might be to address a
possible problem which in this case makes upgrading even more worthwhile.

I also forgot to mention Spark plug wires are a great investment too.

What type of spark plug wires? How would those help?

The spark plug wires will just help you to regain lost horsepower due to old plugs/wires and engine wear. For example your car won't be burning the fuel as efficiently with spark plugs and wires that have say, 50,000 miles on them, compared to brand new ones. I have Ford Racing wires.

As for other ways to improve the performance of an ATX cougar, maybe its just my car, but with all my mods, my friend in his ATX cougar with just an intake can keep up with me

For real, there seems to be something wrong there.

Go for the cold air off of CustomCougars. Great value.

MSD spark plug wires help because they burn hotter. Increasing fuel effeincy and blah blah blah. Hotter = more pressure = more push to the pistons = more power to your wheels. You can get a better distrubition box too, which helps the spark plug wires.

he has the AEM intake. It's probably all the crap I have in my car. That's what I'm blaming it on anyway, who knows. His car has more mileage than mine, and the manifolds have never been cleaned out, spark plugs/wires never changed...I don't know. I have 100lbs of stereo stuff in my trunk.
