Before I go ahead and do this, can I confirm that there realy is no way of getting it off without breaking the wires to the O/D switch?
Just drill out the rivet and then give it a damm good pull, and out she pops??
Will I need a new switch when I mount the O/D switch onto the dash, or can you remove the OE one from the gear lever itself, and install it on the dash?
Thanks everyone.

well it doesn't really matter if you break the wires or not because once you get the shifter off you still have to cut the wires anyway to get the shifter out of there. Not sure if you can get the button out tho, just buy one from radio shack for $3.00.

When you get a new button switch from radioshack or wherever, make sure it's a momentary. If you're not sure how to tell you can just ask an associate, they'll know what a momentary button switch is.

You don't need to break the wires - most people around here just 'pulled' until it came out... if you kneel in your seat, and use your knee as a buffer, you will stop the handle from moving too far, and you won't rip out the wires. I've done this so far on three Cougars, and have never damaged the shifter, wires, button, or harness.
