View Full Version : Modding an MEX-5DI?

I own the sony head unit with the full color tft screen. Ive been wondering what would it take, do you think, to relocate the faceplate? The face is hinged on either end by motorized linkage and has a simple ribbon cable to carry power/data to the screen and buttons.
BatCougar's cougar had the type of setup that I was hoping was possible, but his wasnt Sony i dont think. That probably doesnt matter since the principal should be the same. Who was it that created that setup? Considering i can get the face off, Where can one get a long length of ribbon cable? I'd love to relocate the face and put an LCD screen where the player is now, and have it manually fold down so i can insert a cd.

PM BatCougar. he did this, and put it where the warning lights are in the overhead consel. he was actually selling his for like $200 i think. might still be for sale.

i dont think that batcougar did it himself i am pretty sure he bought it off someone..but he may have the knowhow to get it done if not he can tell you who he got it off of..

i have that same deck and that would be sweet if you did this....on the other hand that deck cost alot i would never try this on my own..i hope you know what your doing

only thing i am confused about now is where do you put your cds in?? into a naked deck? or do you have another deck for cds and dvds?
now that you have the face plate up in the ceiling where is the rest of the deck?

he said he wanted to put a tv infront of the rest of the deck and have it fold down to put a cd in

Knibbs and I destroyed my old Kenwood HU trying to do this :(
Much easier to just relocate the HU to the ashtray area.

That's the ONE Thing that makes me wish I had an auto... the 5DI has a disk tray that pops out instead of a simple insert slot... so if I moved the player to the lighter location the disk tray would definatly come in contact with the shifter, unless i was in 4th.
