Does anyone know the costs involved in upgrading a 99 - 00 wheel to a 01- 02? I like new one as a preference., I am not seeking opinions on the wheels.
I was just wondering if anyone knows the costs involved with the diffusing the airbag, new wheel put on, proper airbag installation, and mounting.
Thanks,
[GnuLoCo]
i have always loved how the 01-02 wheel looks in comparison to the 99-00 one and have always wondered if this is ever possible...great question sorry i don't kno the answer to this but would deffinitely be interested in knowin if anyone has attempted this before

I will have my 01-02 Cougar Wheel for sale in the coming weeks... I just have to see if the item can be removed safely... If not I will just send it attached to the Steering Rack :)

The 99-00 steering wheel has been switched out for the newer 01-02 many times. It involves disconnecting the battery, loosening a couple screws on the underhousing of the column, pulling the airbag cover and airbag out, removing two or three more bolts, and then bolting the new one back on.

That doesn't help explain the possibilities of putting the airbag back in. From what I have heard, you must do it right or all hell could break loose. In no way would I do this if there was not an airbag.

The airbag is installed in the reverse order - it is the same two bolts that hold it in, and they are independent of the steering wheel.

I just picked up a new wheel on ebay for like 15 bucks (99 leather, I didnt have that option). It came with the entire steering rack. I havent tried unbolting the wheel off the rack yet (I hope its not too hard). Dont forget to disconnect the battery before you pull the airbag.
anyways, heres a few picts of the rack

i took my bag out it is easy just two bolts hold it in but make sure you disconnect the battery first or you could have an airbag in your face.

Is it legal to change steering wheels??? I read a post a while ago where it said that if you have an airbag it is illegal to take it out. I wanted to go with an aftermarket steering wheel but that post prevented me from doing it. Does anyone know for sure if this is legal?
Furthermore, will most aftermarket steering wheels just mount right up? Has anyone tried it recently?

Well if you swap in a 01-02 cougar steering wheel you'd be taking the airbag out to disconnect the wheel and put the new one in but you'd have a air bag in the new one. As far as the aftermarket I believe you can take out the passenger side legally but not the driver's side

I saw an aftermarket wheel I was interested in. I have seen them on other cars in magazines and stuff... Don't you think it should be a personal choice to have an airbag or not? As long as I keep it and have it reinstalled when I sell it I should be fine don't you think?

it is your choice and its not against the law, in texas anyway, as long as you put a warning label somewhere on the car, like the inside of the door jamb. and when you sell/trade in the car. you have to inform the buyer/dealer of the airbag, or put it back in. Most likely the dealer will make you put it back on or wont buy the car.
when you put in an aftermarket steering wheel you need an airbag simulator to keep the airbag warning indicator light from flashing, this simulator comes with the necessary label.
