are the mtx75 trannies all the same for contour/cougars regardless of 4cyl or 6cyl? Do they have the same final drive ratio? I heard that the mtx75 from the cougar/contour has 4.06 final drive gear, what year did ford start putting 4.06 gears in these mtx75's? sorry for all the questions, but i am trying to get a contour/cougar tranny into my focus and would like to get all the information possible. thanks!

The gears are the same minus the final drive i believe. The only problem is the 6cyl will not bolt up to the 4cyl due to the case housing.

Gearing is different along with the case...
The final drive in the Zetec MTX75 is a 3.8.
If you pick up a 4.06 final drive, you need to find one with a solid pinion gear, since the earlier ones used splined ones.
I happen to have a 4.06 final drive with a splined pinion in my garage ready for someone to take.

whats the difference between the spindled and non spindled pinion gears?
I plan on using my current case housing and attaching it to the mtx75 from a cougar/contour.
thanks for the replies!

MTX-75
1st: 3.42
2nd: 2.14
3rd: 1.45
4th: 1.03
5th: 0.77
CD4E - ATX
1st: 2.89
2nd: 1.57
3rd: 1.00
4th: .70
Final Drive Gear Ratios
2.5L MTX – 4.06
2.0L MTX – 3.84
2.5L ATX – 3.77
2.0L ATX – 3.92
The Duratec & Zetec engines have a different bell housing so the transaxles are not swapable.
However Final Drive Gears are interchangeable - MTX to MTX & ATX to ATX only.
Remember that also gives a 3.92 final drive gear to those ATX V6 folks. Any torque factor helps. (~5% increase btw)

The more you can get from the power the slushbox lets through the better.
It will give a slight perk (that +4-5% torque factor) to every gear.
