as long as the light shines though, it is totally legal. Alot of members in fl have night shading done. Both Sunni, and caenus have it right off the top of my head, and I don't think they have had any problems. click the link I found all mewmeber sin cougar db who have them so you could see.

I looked and could not find anything on it. It might be up to the cop if they just want to mess with you or not.

Cool. Thanks for the info & thank you tampmamoney for actually looking it up. I just wanted to make sure that it was legal just in case a cop did decide to mess w/ me.

in my opinion though its hard to see caenus' brake lights. I was following him and I was like oh sh*t and had to stop fairly hard.

Sunni doesn't actually have it on her car, but like Thundercat said, as long as the light shines through I think you're ok......

just from my own personal experience in the lighting area, i had a cop tell me that your tail lights must reflect red and be visible from 200 feet away. when i had my accord i had clear tail lights with red bulbs however since the lights themselves did not reflect red i was given a ticket. and as far as headlights, i have friends who ha blackout covers on their headlights and were also given tickets for them. supposedly you are not supposed to have anything on your headlights to impede the brightness of the lights. keep in mind this is all just from personal experience, however i am not sure of what the exact law says.

It probably just depends on the cop but I've been pulled over for head light blackouts and I know people who have been pulled for blackout tailight covers as well...I've seen the night shades and honestly the blackouts aren't that much darker...I think if you were involved in a wreck and someone hit you from behind they would have a good case...It's always the person in backs fault but if you had nightshades and they could prove it, you might have a problem.
In spite of all this...I'm still putting on mine...lol...I just tend to over think everything.

Hmm. Im going to paint the tail lights too, that means that there will not be any red to reflect. Oh well, I hope the tickets arent to expensive!!!

if i remember correctly it was an 86 dollar ticket. i got lucky the first few times i got pulled over and was given warnings, however i guess i caught them on a slow day when i actually got the ticket. good luck with them.

I might have to devise a plan of some sort that will leave some of the red... That sucks though b/c I wanted it to be all black:(

i think it all depends on how strct the cops are in your area. since all there is over here is old people the crime rate isnt exactly through the roof. so the cops have plenty of spare time on their hands to come and mess with the kids and their cars. i donno how it is in your part of fl.

I cant say that this area is full of old people. Especially since the little league almost won the world series, this place is booming. I dont think I would have a lot of problems w/ Orange Co Cops, maybe not even Apopka cops, but I think Seminole co might be a problem.:loser: You also have to think, Apopka is pretty close to Orlando, we have a lot of Car clubs here & I havent heard to many horror stories. My dad knows a bunch of Orange Co cops, so I think I will ask one of them this weekend, just to see how much Im going to get harrassed:biggrin:

Hahaha, thanks for stopping! :) I admit they are slightly harder to see during the day but at night its really not that bad. It really depends on your area and the cops in your area. I live in between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami, and commute to Miami every day. I've had everyone from local cops to state troopers behind me during day and night and I haven't got pulled over yet. (knock on wood) I considered getting some PIAA bulbs for the tails to make them light up more, but never got around to it.
Here's an older pic on my stock rims in daylight with the nightshaded tails. I got some more at http://caenus.cougardb.com

in a way i kinda think not doing the reverse lights is different and cool, but then i look at the whole thing being done and i think i like that better.
both of you guys Nightshading looks really good though, better than that bright red for sure. wish i had done it before putting my taillight covers on :banghead:

I saw Joe's (oje's) white cougar with NiteShaded tail lights at CF2k2 -- he's left the backup lights area unpainted, but done the rest of the tail lights and I think it looks great. I'm copying it on my white '99 now that the humidity has dropped enough. Here's a picture of Joe's car, the one of the far left. (I found the link in another posting.) (http://www.carlosscripts.com/albums/cf2k3-caravan/mini-cf2k3%20023.jpg)
He told me that after the NiteShade, he applied clearcoat & there's a discussion of NiteShade & clearcoat here. (http://www.fastcougar.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=11&threadid=83759&FTVAR_MSGDBTABLE=)
I'm glad you asked about the legality of this -- I was just going to trust to luck......

Thanks for all the information, I really do appreciate it! Marge, I figured there would be other people w/ the same Q, so ur welcome. I have a white 99 too, & I wanted to paint my tails white, but totally hated the way the red looked & that is why I decided to NiteShade.

You can get the NiteShades from Summit Racing. As far as a how to, you can find one on the team neco website or in the How-to's on this site.
