My cougar is going under the knife next sunday. A mechanic friend of my dad is coming over to change my flywheel because it has chipped teeth on it and screeches when I go to start the car. I need to order one and was just wondering if anyone knew how much they were? thanks

flywheel for a 1999 2.5L automatic
$51.53 + tax. Part # XS7Z-6375-AA

Engine plate between block and bell housing (if needed, there was a slight design change between the original one on my 99 and this one)
$13.21 + tax. Part # NS XS2Z-7007-AA

(replaced mine when I had the transmission out of my car)

is this the same screeching other people have discribed as a problem with the starter. Does yours only do it occassionally, I have the same problem and would like to know what part that is failling.

thanks,
dan

I had the starter replaced last wednesday. That wasn't the problem...the problem is the flywheel, which, if not fixed after a period of time, will eventually destroy the starter.

Flexplate.

ATX's do not use a flywheel.

Flywheel/flexplate the wording is interchangeable. Everything I read refering to the ATX says it is a flywheel and the dealer has it listed as a flywheel on the invoice.

The to layman it is a flywheel, to the mechanic it is a flexplate...

It serves the purpose of a "flywheel"...say flexplate to people, and they say...ummm sounds like fun...

OK, makes sense now. Thanks.

OK i got the part today, it was listed as a flywheel, and the mechanic who's putting it in next week called it a flywheel, and well, it looks like a flywheel! I can't wait to get this stupid problem fixed! 1 week from Sunday is judgement day, I hope my current flywheel holds out that long.

Hey, can you do a how to on this? I just live with my screeching for now, but someday I'm gonna do something about it. :)

I really don't know about a how-to. My dad just knows this guy in work who's a mechanic and I don't think he'll like me getting in the way with a camera or asking him questions about all the parts. If I'm home I'll probably help him a bit and watch him do it, so I can explain what needs to be done at best, cuz I am interested too.
