Need help with exhaust. Do they make a dual exhaust setup that is relatively quiet? I don't want loud. I could take a little louder than stock, but not much at all. Just going mainly for looks...
Quasi-dual exhausts (like the Borla and Trubendz) are the readily available dual exhaust setups for our cars. A true dual exhaust is a custom job (one pipe per bank of cylinders).
Borla is by far the quietest aftermarket system available. You can make a custom system that may be quieter, but it doesn't come with a 1,000,000 mile warranty.
Trubendz is an agressive sound, even with the Borla muffler. Some prefer the aggresive tone, some dislike the droning sometimes experienced, whereas my personal opinion is that the system makes the car sound like something it doesn't have under the hood, regardless of muffler type.

Yeah, I suppose I'm just going for looks then. Sounds like the Borla would be close to stock in sound, but still have the Quasi-dual exhaust setup, right?
The Borla sounds almost stock at idle. I should probably refine that to "It sounds almost stock unless you get on the throttle". Then it gives a throaty growl that matches the car quite nicely.
If you're going for just looks, maybe a shop can weld on a Y-pipe and dual exists on your stock system. No performance gain.

What about this with the Magnaflow??? Anyone running this? I've read that it is relatively quiet...

The Borla duals with Carbon Fiber tips is probably the quietest aftermarket exhaust you can get. That's what I have. Borla discontinued the model when they stopped making the cougar, so you have to do a special order directly from them to get it now (as far as I know), which is pretty expensive. I personally bought mine used... It's probably the best quality, nicest looking kit you can get for the Cougar (in my opinion)...

Being a newbie and all, I guess I gotta ask, what does carbon fiber tips have to do with the way it sounds? Couldn't I just buy the dual Borla setup without carbon fiber tips?

According to Trubendz, their single exit and dual exit (Quasi Dual) systems are about the same loudness but the dual has a kinda Mustang like tone. They also indicate that the general progression of their systems are: Flowmaster (loudest), Borla (close to Flowmaster), and Magnaflow (least loud). Their dual rear muffler systems are loud but quiet down quite abit with the included silencer.

The tips themselves have additional resonators in them which further dampens the sound (vs. the Borla kit with the regular phantom tips). Also, just for clarification, the Borla kit offered by Trubendz is only the Borla muffler, and is NOT the same as the full Borla kit...
Attached are a few pics for ya...

If the Borla Duals w/ CF tips is to loud for you.. your going to have to stay stock... You will not find a more quiet system in the aftermarket.

So basically there is no such thing as quiet duals ? I'm S.O.L. I suppose. It's too bad, because not everyone wants to be loud, but some like the dual look... Maybe an exhaust shop can custom make one that's dual, but quiet?

Probably the best way to go. The Borla is NOT loud- It only pipes up when you get on it, which is exactly when you WANT it to be loud.

Guess I need to hear one in real life. The clips that I've heard of the Borla sound loud to me... Then again, anything is going to sound "loud" over the silence of stock I suppose...

Trust me, the Dual Borla with the CF tips is very quiet. I was actually slightly disappointed that it wasn't louder then it is, and I was looking for a quiet exhaust. I can hear the intake over the exhaust under most driving conditions....

I felt the same exact way.. Thought I wasted money on an exhaust that was just as quiet as my stock (though the 3mpg gain I got was worth it). I felt that way untill that fatefull day I had MSDS headers installed... then it all changed. Now the Borla w/ CF Tips really sounds nice.. I believe it to be the best sounding system on the cougar.. period.
And on that same note, Im selling my Borla w/CF tips as we speak.. Check out the NJNECO forum for my For Sale thread if your intrested.

I don't want an annoying loud car either and from what i've heard I am going to go
with the Borla set up. it only gets loud when you punch it. The cougar is just waay tooo quiet
for a sporty car stock..

I have a questions, if someone is going to sell you a used borla dual with angel tips, how can you figure out that it is not fake?
