I have heard some talk that you can change your gear ratios on some transmissions. Is this possible on my transmission? I have the I4 Zetec.

You can buy a gear kit...It'll have new ratios including a new final drive ratio (ring and pinion).

You can just change your final drive gear, and that will effect the gearing of the car...the ratios will remain the same, but the overall gearing (speed per gear) will be affected.

Go look around the focus group... they are actually using the gearset outa a V6 duratec spec mtx75. They have complete instructions available there. Also... Leo Capaldi sells 4.5 final drives. It depends on what you want... you need to work out how much HP you intend on having and how fast you intend on going. You need to decide what top speed is your goal. If you want a drag car... what is your REALISTIC top speed? You gear for that and close up your ratios to keep you in the zetec's powerband through each shift. Now its a totaly diffrent story for road racing... it all depends on what you want to do and how much power you have to get you there.

http://www.quaifeamerica.com/

You can go there and check out the quaife kit, and then add the LSD to the mix...

Tranny gearing is not just a guessing game. As EXigent said, you'l need to assess what your car is to be used for, where the powerband sits, what gears and what RPM range is key, etc etc...then you match the gearing there.

It is also quite expensive for the parts and then the install if your not a skilled tranny mech.

Quaife's kit sells for $4600, I have seen it for like $4200 and $5000 also...plus $600 for the lsd...

For a car with a CTA intake and side markers, I don't think is the direction you want to lean towards...

Hey I just noticed...

For a car with a CTA intake and side markers, I don't think is the direction you want to lean towards...

Thats not nesasarily true. He doesnt need a close ratio gearset... just a bigger final drive. For less then $800 iirc Leo sells 4.5 final drives... Couple that with a quaife and youll drop AT LEAST .5 off your 1/4mi. Leo sold one to a focus that drag raced... it had some mods nothing to jump up and down about and he shaved .4 with ONLY the 4.5gear so bang for buck its WAY better then anything else he could buy.

That is of couse if he can drop the trans himself.... hell its going to be time for a clutch soon right!!!???!!!

I guess you haven't read my signature lately ;)

I well up with the Final drive gear...however still it is goal dependant for the type of gearing you want.

I will have almost the exact gearing I want for my goal...
