A mundane subject I know - anyone able to recommend a rack for the Cougar to carry one bike, preferably not obscuring the rear number plate? - Pete

I have tried a number of bike racks and not one seems that safe on the Cougar. Some have a problem that the straps are just too short to reach the top of the boot. the best and safest way is going to be roof bars and mount. Although I have seen in Halfords a rear rack which carriers 2 bikes in line with the car and hooks on the the top of the boot looking at it that should fir fine cost was about £120 I think.
Don't get one mail order as it probably won't fit. I got some Ford roof bars on eBay for £30 and roof mount
the Atera Giro about £60. from http://www.roofbox.co.uk/
For cheap roof bars if you don't plan on using them a lot take a drive to Ikea they sell roof bars for most cars and I think use the Ford fixings.

Got a set of genuine Ford roofbars for sale - used once, could sell for £50.

Tim, thanks for that but I was looking for an inexpensive (cheap!) option. I am only likely to use it twice (taking the bike to Germany for my son's uni course and bringing it back at the end). I have already got one (for 3/4 bikes) which I used on previous cars, but it obscures the number plate and rear lights; my other cars had towing kit so I could use a connection to an extra rear assembly/number plate (if that makes sense). I've been to Halfords today and my options either increase the height or length of the car to the extent of making the ferry price extortionate. I would like one that sits on the rear window, but have fears that this could lead to expensive damage!! - Pete

Active - Thanks but I've solved the problem. A bike rack of whatever sort would cost me about £50 (minimum) but I can buy a cheap bike in Germany for about £60 and won't need to bring it back, possibly get something second hand for it next year. We live in a disposable society! - Pete
