I was shifting from 3rd to 4th, I was pulling it pretty hard and I heard a pop. the car would not come out of 3rd gear and the shifter was loose. I took off the boot and the bottom clip was off. I did not have any tools, but was able to pop it back on. I was not able to see if anything was cracked. But I think I want to replace the part that snaps onto the shifter, on the end of the cable. Is this a hard process? anyone done this before? would there be alot of adjusting to get it to shift right?

I dont THINK those clips are seperately available from the cables... the cables are like a 2 hour job to get in and out.... Its a definate PAIN IN THE ASS.... To get the shift right you need to buy the ford tool that clips around the lever and holds it at dead center. Its the only way to ensure its lined up correctly.
If you still have "slop" fore and aft in the shifter that is the result of a broken bushing in the shift tower. If you are just worried about he cables falling off I must say it has more to do with the design then wear... It was always a problem in the race car and we made custom ends to cure it... but you wont need to go to that extreme. Worst case new ends or a new cable.... but id drive on it a while to see how things work and if it doesnt happen unless you are REALLY pulling Id ignore it. Like I said the only CURE involves custom fabrication.
