View Full Version : Question about high Mileage on 2.5 V6 Cougars

Hi everyone.
I've got £5k burning a hole in my pocket and have decided upon a 2.5 V6 Cougar. However, for that kind of money, I can only afford 98/99 plate cars. All with approx 100,000 miles. They all have FSH but what I would like to know (honest opinions please) should this put me off?
Your quick replies would be greatly appreciated as I have located the ideal car (Black with the X pack and auto) and want to get it before someone else.......even if it is almost 200 miles away from where I live...sigh
Cheers guys and gals!

personally speaking mine is a 99 s plate but i only have 44500 on the clock, mine hasnt given any real headaches. but i do know that jason has a w plate with near enough 100000 on the clock on an auto and he hasnt had many problems with his. jason is madmale007 if you want to pm him and ask him any q?s
100K on the clock of a V6 with FSH should not put you off.
Depends on how its been driven !
Check air con.
Good luck.

100, 000 miles on a 4/5 year old car is usually better than the same mileage on a 8/10 year old car. Most of the miles have probably been clocked up on the motorway with a nice hot engine. As long as they've got a FSH I would say go for it.
If you're not too much of a car mechanic you could always get it checked out by the AA or RAC just to give you the peace of mind.

Cannot add too much other than the obvious.
Take a look at the car generally. Has it been abused? Does everything work? Does it look tired and tatty? 100K with a careful owner or 100K with someone who did not give a damn?
Might be best to look at some other cars so you have got something to compare against.
Mike.

matts right mine has just a smidge under 100,000miles on the clock came with a full service history and had been used by a rep up and down the motorway which is easy mileage for a modern engine they are designed to take the mileage nowadays, and i would much rather a car that has done motorway work than one that has done a 10-15min journey every morning without being warmed up properly.
Mine is an auto so its a little harder to abuse them as you can a manual they tend to get easier use than a manual would....as mike says use general condition of the car as an indicator rather than mileage check seats any holes from careless owners? scratches all over it where it has not been parked well?.
The only thing you will probably find on a car with that mileage is a few stone chips from being on the motorway so much.....
hope that helps if you have anything you want to ask that i haven't mentioned pm me or email me here (madmale007@hotmail.com) ill be glad to help if i can.

 Mine is a 99 model and in the last 18 months since purchase we have put about 35,000 on the clock (now at 59,000). Apart from a new alternater (covered by warenty) 3 services and 4 tyres absolutely no problems.

We were on the autobahn few weeks ago...took the cat up to 130,but a little way off full revs....I will have a little wager with you that you will be left standing still at 130+ by the big mercs/beemers & porches..........WOOSH ! long gone & do they love to tail gate + the weather dont slow them down.We traveled the full length of Germany border to border, without seeing one accident, AND the mobil peelers are thin on the ground only saw 5 in total.Have fun....and a safe home.

 Been there many times and got the T-shirt. My last car was a Citroen XM Turbo and the feeling of being overtaken by a BMW 7 series who passed me at 125 mph as if I wasnt moving was quite something (and I was still exellerating, marginally!). They don't tailgate as such - you're expected to get out of the way!! I will just be interested to see what the top speed of an ATX is. - Pete

Do you sometimes regret having admitted that you are a cop? You seem to be getting some stick over it.

.......when u is in the MIDDLE lane with very fast VERY fast intermittant traffic on your right....its rather difficult to go any where but to follow ya nose.............i HAVE been over taken on more than one or two occations at 100 to 130mph by 5/6.......7/8/9 HIGH speed cars with gaps between them which is more akin to F1 racing ....but credit where credit is due....the German autobahn driver is vastly more experianced and capable of very high speed sustained driving than the M1 dasher, of which more than half of these should not be allowed to drive a donkey cart let alone a powerful automobile as i am sure the UK motor way patrols can confer.... myself 46 years on a FULL license :wiggle:

 No, I'm proud of it!
My father was a cop, I am, and my son is. What I am ashamed of is the way the governments targets are driving us - who would want to be in North Wales at the moment.
When I joined in 1976 my father said "Its not the job I joined in 1949" When my son joined this year I said exactly the same thing!! (apart from the year). I am not ashamed of what I am. What I hate is the way we are being driven by the Government and reported by the press.
I manage disasters - any spontaneous major incident I control for the "golden hour"; if I mess up God help me. I was responsible for our initial response to Dr. Kelly's death. I have the delegated responsibilty of my Chief Constable, which includes deploying armed police. I am a round peg in a round hole and love it!
If the wheel comes off its my fault! but I can live with that. - Pete
