Cougar Owners with transmission problems,
Hello, I am 2000 V6 automatic cougar owner with currently 56000 miles on the engine. I purchased my car on September 1st 2000. Ever since then, in the summer of 2001 i had some problems with the fuel pump. I took the dealer and they said that they fixed it. After picking it up, the same exact problem occured again. I repeated this process three more times, and finally the third time the problem didn't occur again. I moved down to Virginia from Michigan last year January and had some problems with the car that were unexplainable from the dealerships and shops. About two months ago my car lost 1st and 2nd gear and won't move anywhere not even in reverse!! So i got the car towed to the dealership and they said it would cost $3036 to rebuild the transmission. They also said it would cost me more if I were to put in a brand new transmission. Most of my miles are highway miles and my car is in practically brand new condition.
I read some of the topics on fuel pumps on this forum and also read some problems people have with their transmission. Personally I am very sick of my cougar having problems and was wondering if any other cougar owners out there are having the same problems. I have no idea whether or not if the dealership sold me a lemon car or something, but it's ridiculous that my car started having problems in less than one year!!
Don't get me wrong, i love my cougar and hear from alot of other cougar owners on how good their car runs or their racing stories and such. Believe me, I wish I could experience these things too but I can't because my car has too many problems even when I do get maintenance checkups, oil changes every 3000 miles, etc.
If you are a cougar owner out there and are having problems just like I am right now, email me at jay_yu83@yahoo.com
It would be much appreciated!!!
Jay

You know, for every person with problems out there...there are hundreds of owners who have NO problems. My MTX, V6, 99, Cougar, with 83000 miles has had no problems.
Edit: Removed rude comment.

Hey Fett, I'll chime in. I have a 99 ATX w/ 118,500 miles and all I've had replaced was a sunroof (my fault, tried to open when there was 1/4" of ice on top, but replaced free), catalytic converter (at 62k miles, replaced free), alternator and battery at 103k (left hood open during pretty good rain for about 45 minutes then started car and it drained that day), EGR system cleaned and spark plug wires changed at 110k miles. I do have a replacement fuel pump and IACV valve in my possession just in case either of those go bad.
For that many miles and just spending around 600 bucks total for those and another 600 for a couple hubs and bearings I'd say that it's been a great car. Still runs great.
BTW, sorry to the original poster about your tranny going. You are past any lemon law and the CD4E is documented to have a 72% rate of going over 150k miles, so you're pretty much out the money. You should be able to get it rebuilt for less than that elsewhere though, so I'd shop around before forking over $3k of your money.
Yea, get different quotes from other places. Most Ford dealers are going to be in the same price range. If you are stuck in a "low money" situation, then ask the dealer to price you out a Greenleaf tranny. Sure it will be used, but it will have a 1 yr warranty...or you can even request a LIFE TIME WARRANTY from Greenleaf. It costs a few more bucks, but it will have a LIFE TIME warranty, parts and labor.

don't let the dealership fix it, take it somewhere else! The'll charge as much as they can to fix anything.

I have a 99 V6 MTX, and I've replaced the sunroof and the alternator. No transmission problems yet (knock on wood), but I think you'd be much better off NOT taking it to a dealship. Try looking around, try finding a used transmission from a junk yard, etc. They can more than likely find one for you somewhere. I guess problems are common, but then again there are a lot of people that have never had a problem. I guess it's luck of the draw. Good luck though, I wish you the best.

96800 miles and mine went out this past weekend. Dealer wanted $3500 to replace with a remanufactured transmission. I'm working with another MC-Neco member to rebuilt one that he has and we are going to replace mine.

Dave,
Have you done the repair yet? I am facing replacing mine this weekend.. and the Ford time book said 9.5 hours. Wondering how long it took you and your friend to replace... Also, don't feel bad.. I had the first ATX replaced by Ford at 32,000 and now the second at 115,000. But now that it's paid for.. it's play time.
Thanks...
Mike

I have not done it yet. I was going to do it this weekend but with this wonderful power outage I don't think I'll have my torque convertor back from level10 in time. Looks like I might have to wait until next weekend. I'll let you know how it turns out once it is all done.

Don't know if anyone still reads this posting, but I have a 99 V6 auto. It blew, and blew bad between 60,000 and 65,000 miles. Fortunately, after having the car towed to several different places I managed to find someone who rebuilt it for $1600; I had a broken drum aparently. Anyways one of the tranny places i went to even said the drum has been a problem on the cougar's paticular transmission. I'm on just over 76,000 miles now. I feel your pain!

No matter what kind of car you buy, you will always have something go wrong. I have had minor things go wrong with my 99 coug... Nothing too serious. My major complaint though is that I can't seem to keep my check engine light off for more than a week since I bought it! As soon as I fix something, it comes back on and I pull a different code!

Mine went roughly 64k miles.........I cant remember what it was exactly, i'll have to dig...but it was something like the front clutch pack assembly and drum??
Covered under my extended warranty, but the job would've been $1800. One ford dealership said nothing was wrong or my fault, next dealership took it right in, got my warrant,y and charged me my $100 deductible

New torque converter and valve body (valve stuck open, which in turn ruined the converter) at 30,000 miles. $1200 job, under warranty. Everything else seems golden, except for a tie rod that needs to be replaced soon.

Warranty, warranty, warranty... Always buy an extended warranty when you buy from a dealer. I've already had to use it (power steering pump). Mine was only $1200 for 2 years/24k from Ford. $100 deductable and I'll have a new tranny if it ever goes out. It does some wierd shifting at times so I think it's prolly on it's way out. If not I'll make sure it goes out before the warranty is up...
