... a Cougar 2.0 auto, any colour but green, for about £6.5k?

Sorry to be blunt, but i've been searching for a week now with very little sucess, and my feet are starting to hurt from walking to work. After the dashed attempts at an FTO (£2.5k for insurance isn't fun), i've fallen for the Cougar, and am ready to squeeze some money out of the bank at the drop of a hat, but i can't find one to spend my money on!

Appologies if this is the wrong place for this, but the for sale/wanted form seemed very american...

I'd get a 2.5 but the insurance is out of my range at the minute. Although i'm 24 and have been driving for 5+ years (0 points), i've never had my own insurance, it's been all named driver and company cars (with no claims), so i either get quoted £2k, or refused outright. Anyone know of an insurer that will take into account named driver/company status? If the insurance can get down to what you're paying i'd get a 2.5, but it's the limiting factor at the minute.

All the big Insurance companies should take into account a letter from you employer stating your driving record, ie if you have had any accidents in that time.

Also for your info, if you get a company car some insurance compaines will hold you no claims for up to 4 years. So you can still get a discount when you get another car, unless you have an accident in that time. Another thing I did was bought an old banger to keep my insurance running just third party.

 Phayze..Im with 'Tesco's' insurance, believe it or not.. when i bought my cat a few months ago the salesman recommended them , and they are good with plenty of extras, such as contents and all glass cover. As i own another car(escort) on my insurance with full no claims they agreed to let me have 'Full no claims' for my cat also.. on the agreement that my company gave me a headed letter stating that i have also been driving a company car for four yrs with no claims...i use the escort for work now & the company car has gone.. Im 32 , 3points fully comp=£385. I paid £6.600 for my cat ( V6 ful-loaded 1999 T 63k miles)) at 'The Great Trade Centre' in white city w-london... Any questions send me a message and I'll give you my mobile.....

You are not going to find a 2.0 auto trans model. Only a few made - less than 600 - and only for US market in 1998. Most initialy used by Ford/Mercury execs (Cougar sold under US only Mercury brand name, elsewhere as Ford) I believe in the UK you will find 2.0 (Zetec 4 cyl.) only with manual. V-6/2.5L available in MTX and ATX. If you look thorugh the UK and other areas of this site, will find out good (looks, power) and bad (alternators, fuel pumps) of the Cougars. Shop carefully.

Don't buy a 2.0 ATX, either go for the manual version or buy a 2.5 ATX - superb car!!

Thanks for the advice peeps, Tesco have been the cheapest so far, but at £1800 it's not brilliant. But that was for a 2.5. Apparently no-claims for company drivers is only taken into account if it's been less than a year since you stopped driving on company insurance, and it's been about 18 months for me. Still, it could be worse. I'll phone up Greenlight tomorrow and see what they quote, but i doubt it'll go below £1500 which is what i'd call acceptable.

LeonsCat > i was beginning to think there were very few made. I could find one or two in 3 days of searching, but the insurers quoted for it anyway.

Not that it all really matters, it's all coming from Mr Graduate Loan anyway, and the insurance is month by month rather than a lump, so it makes it easier to swallow. OK, off to find an auto 2.5 for about £6k, should be fun..

auto v6 is the way to go!!! £1800 is not bad for someone your age with no no claims on a group 16 car!! just a bit of advice tho if you can pay your insurance in one lump sum its one less thing to worry about paying each month and you will have more spare cash to mod your car!!!

That's the plan, but it's kinda dependant on how much the car is in the end. TBH, once it's been de-badged and the windows tinted, i don't want to do anything else save some alloys, but that can wait..

It's none of those reasons - it's like Marmite, you either like it or you don't. Personally i think that any energy i have to expend that gets in the way of the car going forward is a waste. It's something you have to constanty think about, and no matter what anyone says, changing gear manually does get in the way. Accelleration is probably 0.5s slower in an auto. So what? We're not on a track, and it's not a Ferrari. Autos are for people past the point of caring about driving, it's for those who care about getting there with a hand free to wave to the laydies.. ;)

Yeah, i realised it was Churchill when i saw the ad last night. They wanted £1900, so either Admiral have made a mistake, or i'm going to be happy... I think screentrade's online quote thing might have a bug in it, they wanted.. wait for it... £12822.14.

Bloody hell custom_images/emoticons/shocked.gif......one other thing, if you only do a fairly low annual mileage then be sure to tell them as that can make quite a difference to the premium....

Well Admiral hadn't made a mistake, so i'd suggest anyone in my age bracket paying over £1100 give them a call. There's a big (ish) excess (£450), but i think it's worth it. Now i have to find an auto 2.5, Ford have 1 on their database in the whole country, and that's an X-pack, which i was trying to avoid, as it's more expensive. So if anyone knows any dealers (don't want to go private just yet) in the south who have an auto 2.5 for <£7k, let me know, i can't find many...

Phayze, How you doing with the purchasing? ..i'm feel sorry for you that you have to pay sooooo much for insurance, can;t you try the old 'get your dad to insure it and have you as a named driver' trick?...
Now you can see why so many youngsters drive around with no insurance..Is the V6 alot more to insure? if not try one, you won't wanna get back in a 2.0L........Good luck fella.......

Actually the insurance isn't that bad from Admiral. A grand for a 2.5l coupe at my age with 0 no-claims is better than i expected. I'd get my mum to insure it and have me as a named driver, but her insurance is worse than mine! 6 points in 6 days will do that to your premiums.

There aren't that many autos in autotrader, but one's turned up for £6k this weekend from Slough, just 10 miles from me, so i might just go have a look. Pity it's silver, i wanted the blue or a black one.

Well i kinda found one, but.. and i want to get someone else's advice here, it's done 90k miles - S reg. Apparently it's all motorway miles, and has had a service 2k ago, but still is this way above average for a 4 year old car? It's private and obviously i'd get an AA check before parting with any money, but i'm probably going to take a look this weekend, anything i (being a complete car pleb) should look out for on a test drive?

First time i'd really driven one (round the forecourt doesn't count) - i didn't realise it had so much omph!
