well it's July and time for inspection. I know i'm gonna definitely fail for safety because I took the orange reflector out of my headlights and have clear sidemarkers, and taillight covers. However, all of that can be fixed. Do you think I would pass for my intake/exhaust? I have a cat and a muffler, but no resonator (trubendz/borla duals). Putting everything back together (reflector, take covers off..etc) would be a last resort tho, because if I did all that and failed anyway for the I/E, it would have been a waste of time. Is there any way I can pass or anyplace I can go to in North Jersey where I can pass? How does that work when you pay $50 or whatever it is to get your car inspected?

Well....when i last went for inspection I had I/E, tail light covers, clear sidemarkers with a white bulb, and fuzzy dice hanging from my rear view mirror and i passed fine.
Course this is south Jersey, im sure things are a bit more strict up by y'all

I passed with taillight covers and clear side markers with stock bulbs (light kinda orangish when lit).. The amber reflector may be a different story, but you may wanna try n borrow somebody's lights before running thru inspection, then just put your modded lights back in after.

The lights may be the least of your problems, NJ is starting soon to inspect for pollution via the car's pollution control computer, plugging into it instead of doing a sniff test up the tailpipe(s). Are radio ads notifying of this change, and that you won't pass if 'check engine' light flashing. Would recommend a good 'road trip' of about 150 miles, if most of your driving local chugging to 'clear the carbon out'. I would suggest to mave the car look as 'factory' as possible, as may get picky inspector. Try to go weekday am's at Lodi or any other station. May want to consider non-state inspection, but will cost you maybe $80 instead of free.

I'm not worried about that because that doesn't start until August, and I'm due this month. I really don't care if I have to pay, as long as I pass.

Be careful at Lodi, last inspection the guys had a little too much fun with my SVT. Can you say tire spin?!? I was mad as hell! But, I passed, so it was ok, I guess.

they spun your tires at an Inspection Station?

Yup. Getting on the dyno, in that teeny little stretch of pavement, they spun the tires. Also coming off, they did the same thing. Good thing I passed and it was the middle of January, or I would've raised holy hell.

ok , I took my taillight covers, headlight covers, and third brake light cover off, put back the orange sidemarkers, and put the amber reflector back in my headlights along with the little running light bulb and amber parking lights. My exhaust has a muffler and a cat, so I think i'm ok now...

So I finally went for inspection today, I also put back by stock airbox, although I probably didn't have to. So the only thing I was worried about was the exhaust. When I got there, they checked under my car and all that, underbody neons were no problem, then they popped my hood. I didn't think they did that, I think they just wanted to see that was under the hood  Then they hooked up my car for emissions. for SAFETY, I passed, but for OBD/EMISSIONS, I failed. However, because they were doing that beta testing thing for the new inspection process starting in August, I got a passing inspection sticker and my car is good for two years. The guy told me that if I don't get my problem with the emissions checked out tho, I'll fail when I go in two years. Funny thing is they didn't tell my why I failed, my CEL was off, after I reset the battery last night because it was on for the past week with 9201. So on my OBD SYSTEM READINESS STATUS, I failed for "Overall Readiness Result", and under the diagnostics, I failed for "Overall OBD System Result. My FINAL RESULT was a FAIL, but the guy crossed it out and wrote PASS because of this trial thing in NJ. Just thought I'd let everybody know. Oh and there was this other kid there with a sunfire who said he failed last time he came because his exhaust was too loud. My Dad said he should have asked the guy where the decibel testing is for loudness, because what's loud to one person may not be to another. My trubendz/borla is pretty quiet so they didn't say anything.

I believe you failed because you reset your ECU by disconnecting your battery. The ECU then takes a few days before it runs all of its tests. So when they ran the OBD test, they saw your ECU hadnt done all of its rediness testing and you "failed". They do this since a CEL is an automatic fail and resetting the ECU is a quick way to shut that CEL off for a day or even a couple minutes while your car goes through inspection. That 9201 code is not an OBDII code, its a ford diagnostic code that the inspection station would have never found.
Next time, unless you have a CEL, do not reset your ECU by pulling the battery off. Or do it a good week ahead.

it's funny you should say that..I was wondering why under my OBD READINESS STATUS section, most of the things were listed as NOT READY. But it doesn't matter if I reset the ECU or not, I would have failed anyway because my CEL was on. I got lucky my inspection was due in July and not August or later.
