View Full Version : What camera do you use for taking Cougar pictures?

Yes, this is semi-off-topic, but I think it's relevant for those of us into digital photography. I figured we could do a review of our cameras, how well it performs, what basic features it has, and then post a couple examples of digital Cougar photography. :) I'll start.
Canon Powershot A20
-2.0MP
-32MB Compact Flash media card
-Manual/Auto mode
-Panorama mode
-weak macro mode
My Thoughts:This camera was given to me for a Christmas present 2 years ago, and I've really enjoyed it. Definately a solid, economical performer (I believe it was like $250 when my parents picked it up). As mentioned, the macro function is weak (gets really blurry, detail not good), and it doesn't have a lot of manual settings on it. Otherwise, I've been really happy with it. Takes excellent daytime shots (which would be even better if I had a tripod of some sort), and nighttime shots on automatic mode are fairly good for a 2.0MP camera. However, I'm looking to upgrade soon, probably to a G2, S45, or A70.
Now, on to the examples.

Well if you didn't catch my Desktop thread I just got a new camera yesterday. I got a Canon PowerShot S45. It has MANY manual controls, along with a nice Automatic one. It's 4.0MP and I recieved it as a graduation gift for graduating High School. Camera was around $500 bucks (yes I could of gotten it cheaper, but for some reason my 'rents didn't want me ordering it offline.. what gives  ). Anyway the only pic of my coug I have as of right now is the following which is my background at the moment. I also posted another picture of one I took last night that LOOKS INCREDIBLE! I think at least. It looks so real for some reason. The tungsten WB really makes the lights look nice and white. It was about a 4 second exposure if I remember. I'll also include a nice Macro of a flower that I took ;).
I will add to this thread Saturday night, as I plan to detail the car tomorrow!

Of Course! They even have Digital SLR cameras where u can do anything under the sun that you want to. I would reccomend ordering the S50 rather than the s45, its the 5.0mp verison of my camera, it would of been the same price as how much my parents paid.. But if you want the S45 I really reccomend it, I LOVE IT! :)

I got an Olympus Camedia C-400 for my 18th...
-4.0MP
-3x optical zoom
-128 mb card
-aperture, shutter priority, panorama, macro zoom, etc. I love it, only problem is the fingerprint my brother laid on the lens five minutes after I took it out of the box. The camedia software is easy to use, and the card holds like 135 pics. The videos are stupid because it doesn't record sound, there goes any cool cougar vids I could make with it...
When I got my tripod, I started taking awesome night photos with like 4 second shutter speeds, and I took it down to carlsbad with me.

I took this in front of my house. Basic cougar photo, but I probably could have benifited from using a tripod, the photo is kinda blurry.

This is a picture of something that I guarantee nobody has taken a pic of before.
I was walking through the caverns, and I looked up when I passed under a rock,
and there was a spot where the rangers had drilled into a rock to place a light
to illuminate the path. It wasn't natural at all, but I decided If I came at it
from the right angle, it could look good, and I think it came out great.
http://www.fastcougar.com/forums/attachments/waterfall.JPG
I posted this pic in the off topic forums, and the mods decided it was too off topic to be there, and they locked the thread, I didn't mind though, they have to keep the forums clean. This was taken at four mile falls in pagosa springs.
The ranger told us the waterfall is 310 feet high. It felt like it was miles high trying to hike up there...
I thought it was cool that the water droplets didn't blur in the photo, I didn't adjust shutter speed or anything for that photo.

I'm too poor to buy a good camera, so I buy a kodax max disposable every time I want to take pics, and then have them developed on CD (scanning pics always makes them look phooey). It's obviously not a great camera, but it gets the job done.

I have been trying to decide wether or not to buy a digital camera, but in the meantime I do something similar to what Kelli does...I buy the Kodak "PLUS Digital" disposable camera which includes a free picture CD with normal processing. The camera only costs about $9 and the normal processing costs $7, so it's a pretty good deal. I just bought a Sanyo 8100 cell phone w/ camera, so I'll be trying that soon. I'll attach a pic I took using the disposable.

I have the Cannon PowerShot A40
3.0 megapixels
3.0x optical
2.5x digital
102 pics or 75 secs of video on full medium settings on a 32mb card
Macro, Infinity, Continuous, Stitch Assist modes
I can change ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture, Exposure compensation, white balance and a bunch more
some of the manual settings are somewhat limited but i can do every thing i need
Unfortunately 99.9% of the pics i took are of medium resolution as i really only get them to put on the net... so ummm, i have nothing of spectacular quality to take, but it does take them :)

Hosting the pictures elsewhere and then linking to em. If you right click on a pic and choose properties, you can see where the pic is hosted. PM me if you want a couple good places to upload pics for free.

To the top again!!! I finally got around to taking pics of my car. The camera was left in auto mode because I was too lazy to go get my tripod and use it. Here are some pics of my car with the S45.. :)
Edit: I forgot I also made a little movie of my exhaust, http://kyle.krillusions.com/images/s45/MVI_0172.avi - The mic on the camera makes it sound a lot more muffled than it is, its a much nicer in person.

Sony DSC-F55 Cybershot
2.1mp
1600x1280 rez
I bought this for $75 on clearance when I worked at CompUSA. We did this thing where employees named their price on discontinued stuff in the store. It was still retailing for $800 at the time. The camera takes sucky night photos, but real nice daytime ones. Also does 15sec mpeg movies you've seen me post. The full size images look ok, but they are more suited for reduced images for the web.

how can you be off topic in the off topic forum? you must be too "ON" topic, lol.
anyways, back to the topic, I just ordered a Canon S230. after comparing many low-mid range cameras, I decided it's the best one for me. Canon usually produce the best picture quality, Olympus ones are also quiet good but they use expansive memory, I love Sony products but I don't like their digital cameras, somehow most of their sample picture look blurry and noisy compared to canon's.
Red2kCougar: nice camera, nice car, and nice pro shots! too bad S45 is out of my budget at about $450,
hopefully I'll be able to take pictures like that with my new cam.:(

Sony DSC-D770
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/D770/D770A.JPG
-1.5 megapixels, 1344x1024 image size
-5x optical zoom lens f/2.0-f/11.0
-True manual focus option
-Spot, aperture priority metering options
Its about 3 years and still is considered a pretty good camera.
It carries a 128mb memory stick.
I like it because it has a real lens.. :) I can put filters on it etc...
but then again if I'm going to take real photos I will opt for my SLR Minolta..

Olympus C720
3.0 megapixel
8x optical zoom
I don't remember the image size off hand.

I'd just like to make a point:
Please, please, don't use flash all the time while taking pictures people. It's artificial, as for car pictures, TERRIBLE most of the time.
