Anyone have an idea how to correct an inaccurate speedo or odometer? I'm using my Cougar for Time Speed Distance Rallies and need to know my speed and distance more accurately. My odometer is loosing nearly a tenth of a mile every 5 miles.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Cool, glad to hear you trying TSD rally... I've done one in the Cougar and one in my GTI. I usually only do rallies in the winter, keeps the driving more interesting.

I'm not sure how you'd go about physically correcting an inaccurate odometer, but you don't really need to. You can figure out a correction factor for the navigator to use from the odometer calibration leg, that's what it's there for. Just take your recorded mileage and divide it by the theoretical mileage (given in the route instructions)... now, you can just go down the list of mileages given in the route instructions and multiply them by your correction factor.

The keys to making this work the best are: 1) don't get lost on the odo calibration leg (I speak from experience here! ), and 2) don't drive like a hooligan and spin your tires.

Good luck!

PS - Let me know if you feel like rallying sometime and need a navigator.

I know about the correction factor and all, but what a hassle.

The Cougar does remarkably well on dirt roads, but the ABS makes it really hard to stop. I think I'll pull the ABS fuse for the next rally.

If the Wife isn't up to rallying for any upcomming events, I'll look you up.

P.S. Have a good holiday weekend!

It's a hassle, but that's what you have to do, since mileages are just determined by the rallymaster's odometer (granted, it goes down to 0.001 mile), but it could also be easily miscalibrated.

Yeah, I was fairly happy with how the Cougar worked in the dirt, I just didn't like the pounding the suspension took on the rougher sections.

Donny, are you doing the Twilight Tour rally on the 19th? I will probably end up going... in the GTi.

I had planned on it, but one of my wife's friends is getting married. Oh well. I will be doing the Cadillac Color Tour Rally on October 25th, barring any unplanned weddings. Maybe I'll see you there.

D:biggrin:
