View Full Version : Legal issues when changing your exterior car color...

I've used the search tool for the last 15 minutes looking for some answers, but I've come up empty. I suppose it varies from state to state, but has anyone got any experiences to share about what was involved? Did you just go to the registry and tell them? Do some outfits take care of that BS and running around for you? Within the next year it's possible my daughter might buy my car - if I were to make it silver. I'd love to keep the Cougar in the family. Thanks for any answers folks.

This is completely new to me -- why would there be legal ramifications against you when changing the color... only reason I would think of it that the color or material being used was illegal in the first place. The car is still the same big piece of metal... with the same VIN number.

My registration lists the car color as green. I figured that if the color changed, there would be some kind of regulation or requirement to have this information updated... I was wondering what the experiences of others who have done this has been.

You just have to go to the Registry and have the registration changed to whatever color you are going to paint your car.

As long as the vin matches it doesn't matter...
Registration is only for id... hell.. your title doesn't even show a make.. just make, model, class, etc..

Reds & Black will see a slight increase in insurance because they are harder to see at night & are easier picked off by cops.

What would they do? Give you a 'fit-it' ticket.. haha yeah right.. i just spent 14 grand for my chromallusion paint job so now i have to strip it off? no way... plus what do people with that chromalusion paint say for the color of their car?
I really don't think there is many legal issues with this..
did you mean "fix-it" ticket like with tints?
if so.. you can just pay the fine. you dont have to actually fix it. not with tints anyway
edit: not here in ny. I've gotten 3 tickets like that here on 2 different occasions like that.. and just payed the fine

With the chromalusion paints I'm sure they put the dominant color like Orange or Blue.
With the red & black paint, it's true in Mass. I had my old car painted from silver to black & my insurance went up about $10/mo.

I would call the state office where you register your vehicle and ask them directly what they require you to do in case of a paint color change.

Red is a more expensive color to make. I think it is "DUPONT" (i know one of the paint manufacturers owns it)that owns the pigments to red, therefore they can charge what they want for it and get away with it... That is why your insurance goes up with that color. not sure about why black goes up...

First of all some corrections:
Red paint is most expensive to paint because red contains the most gold pigments in it. With gold going over $320/ounce these days, it is always more expensive.
Any color changing paint is registered by insurance by the color "mystic"
All you have to do is contact your insurance company. They are the only people with record of your car color.

My g/f's still sez its black. We had to fill a claim for the front bumper and the insurance flipped of the price of the paint.
