k, i have a pair of audiobahn flame q subs, and the techies over at audiobahn tell me not to put these subs in a sealed box, no reason for it, just no. i even asked about putting them in inverted (magnets out), still no... now what would be wrong with putting them in with magnets out? they would get plenty of cooling this way, and i dont think the cone needs cooling... im gonna do it anyways, i dont have a warranty for them so im just gonna do it. im just checkin why they would say not to??

btw, the reason for the sealed boxes is that im 'glassing them to the corners of my trunk, and that'd be impossible to tune.

All subs have reccomended type sub boxes. That doesnt mean that it will not work, might not work its full potential, but it still wont cause any real problems. One thing about the flame q subs that is they are high excursion: the cone moves to extreme levels. A ported enclosure will allow more air to flow, thus helping the sub travel to its highest level of performance. A sealed box will act as a suspension which will limit the cone movement. The tech. guys just want to make sure you get more out of the sub than a sealed box would allow.

Those subs sound like crap in sealed boxes. I have head a single 12" in a sealed box and it sounded like poop. Thats why they are made for ported boxes. You can try it, but it may not sound that great.

well, mine are 10's, and i had an identicle set in sealed before and i loved it, bass u could feel vs. bass you could hear. i blew those due to way too much power and now have 2 again in a tuned ported box and hate it.

but it shouldnt hurt my subs?

I have the same subs but in 12's... they are going in a sealed box... theroritically isn't a fiberglass enclosure the same as a sealed box? you certainly can't port that and those subs were made for a fiberglass enclosure...

BTW -- my question is this: are there any benefits to inverting a sub besides cosmetic in this case? (Flame baskets)

A sealed box will not hurt the subs in anyway. Like Luky said they may just not perform to thier full potential but they will still sound good if the box is designed properly. And sure you can port a fiberglass box there is no reason why you cant port a fiberglass box just takes some skill.

yea, i dont have enough room to get the amount of airspace for ported, and i personally like the sound of them in sealed boxes. and yes, the reason i'm inverting them is purely cosmetic, because damn... those flame baskets just look too damn tight to hide inside.

I believe one benefit to inverting a sub is that you don't have the basket, and magnets taking up air space in the box its self. Therefore you can have a smaller sized box but more air space in the box. Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but that's what someone said before, and it makes sense to me.

^ correct that is the only bonus, no driver displacement.
