Took about 12 hours minus a 1 hour lunch break and we went nice and slow. Started around 10:00 AM and finshed around 10:00 PM. I will let Dan fill everyone in with the details and pictures. I just wanted everyone to know that there is a new 3.0L on the block and she runs nice and smooth!!! I would also like to say that meeting the CEG guys was a lot of fun ... you guys are great (John, Matt & Bill). Too bad no other NECO members showed up ... you guys missed a very educational experience ... oh well, your loss

Dammit Trevor- You beat me to the post!

The short and skinny is that it fired on the first try. I cranked the engine over without the coil pack connected to test the car of compression, to bleed the fuel system, and to gain oil pressure. We re-connected the coil pack, and it fired immediately.... And went up to 2000RPMs! Figuring the SVT ECU was still trying to find itself, we focused on the coolant and power steering fluid levels. It opened the 180* thermostat VERY quickly (new engines get hot real quick- Not broken in and there is a high level of internal friction), and everything was smoking like a sonuvab!tch, burning off the copious amounts of anti-seize applied to the vital bolts.

Then, the idle got worse- Up to 2750RPMs, and hung there. I shut the motor down, and we did some thinking. IAC, we figured. So, we fired the engine again, and pinched off the IAC tube- Idle came right down. Then we disconnected the IACV itself and let go of the tube- Idle shot right back up to 2750. IAC's bad. I have another at my Dad's place in Fairfax, so that's today's project.

Many thanks to Matt, John, Bill, and Trevor. I cannot imagine what this install would have been like without your help.

Oh well- Here goes folks- I hope you're not on a modem connection:

On the hoist - John (kokopellian) and Matt (xdouble) on ballast duty.

Almost there...

Heinously under-used KVR rotors... A month of rain and no use:

Front header on, with cooler lines- Plenty of room. The CEG guys were cool enough to run out and get me some loom insulation, which we eventually put on over the hose:

Installation continued- Wires in place (we're in the afternoon now):

Y-pipe in place, oil filter filled and installed (I secured the MIL eliminators better than this by the time we were done):

It looks like an engine again:

Oil-air separator, new PCV system. Mounted under the battery box. I used the 3L PCV feed tube, and fed it right to the oil-air separator. Then back to the bottom of the PCV system, and finally into the UIM. I'm so sick of cleaning the UIM...

Ready to go:

It fired right up. Hallejuah!

Nothing like that first start up! Looks good guys! Can't wait to see what she puts down after your gentle break in :) WOO HOO!

Looks really good. Can't wait to see the numbers from a dyno.

Confirmed that the IACV was to blame- I pulled the old one off my original manifold, bolted it on and fired her up. Presto! 750RPMs. Runs like a champ- So much power on tap- Will be hard to keep the reins on her for 500+ miles while I'm gently breaking it in. Clutch has PLENTY of grab- Pedal feel is only SLIGHTLY harder than stock- Centerforce is the way to go...

:banana::hitit:

Hooked up the underside body shield, installed the STB- Works fine if you put the camber kit caps OVER the STB- They will definitely not fit under or in. Tested the fans- They switch on right at 225*, just like they should. Engine runs HOT though- All that compression is makin' some heat... Even with the AWSF22FS one step colder plugs. I gapped to .055", right in the middle of the recommended range.

Now I have to go back and do damage control to my bank account and credit cards- Good thing I reduced the credit limits down to a grand when we re-financed... Even so... Looks like Ramen and Mac & Cheese for a few months while I recover.

Looks great! Sounds so much like the way my project went, minus the extra people that is. I'm happy for you and I'm hoping for 210+ for you!. Don't forget some kind of tuning device so you can dial everything in. Safc should work ok, emanage would be a bit better. Or there is a custom chip but that'll cost more in the end.

later,

Glad to hear it was only the IAC and it's idling correctly now. That was a good time yesterday, and I learned quite a bit.

Dan,

I have been giving it a lot of thought lately and I believe that your KKM is giong to choke your engine in the upper end of the power band. I think that moving to a 7" or 9" K&N or S&B filter will free up a bit more HP on the upper end of the power band (5K+ RPM). In fact, I am willing to wager $20 that if you dyno the KKM and the larger filter back-to-back, you will show a gain on the larger filter ;)

Even better get that intake in the fender, that will be my plan one of these days.

What's your reasoning? That inverted cone in the center?

The filter that comes with the KKM is pretty dinky (in my opinion).

As far as filters go; I watched a flow-test between K&N, Green and stock paper using a closed lexan box with a fan, a hole for a panel filter, and a tube with a ping-pong ball in it. The stock paper couldn't lift the ping pong ball up at all, the K&N lifted it about 2 inches, and the Green filter sent it to the top of the tube. I'd see if you can find a 8x3" Green cone filter. The color is hideous, but damn do they flow nice. :)

As for the inverted cone, that is more for a greater surface area in a small package. If you think about it, the area within the cone is what counts, not the outside surface area. You are trying to fill a volume, not a surface and as such, the inversion merely gets in the way as flow increases ... it may be beneficial at low RPMs, but up top it will be getting in the way.

What is your measurement from the fender well/quarter panel lip to the filter adapter?

Dan, just thought of something ... I'm sure you have already done this, but if not, you might want to ASAP. I'm not sure how damaging overfilling the tranny would be on the MTX, but on the ATX, it has some major consiquences. We filled the tranny on a slight incline and add to that, the front end was jacked up. Before completely breaking in the engine, I would find the levelest ground possible and fully jack up the car and then open the fill hole ... $5 says a 1/4 of quart comes out ;)

I did the same damn thing...forgot I filled it on jackstands and it eventually blew out my pass trans seal. Not a big deal but did have to pull the axle and replace the seal. About a 1/2 Qt. came out. Next time fill with 2 QT's (post 2000) and call it good.

I'll race you once its broken in - just dont take any turns :ugh:

You guys also have to remember that the tranny was DRY after the case had been cracked open for the quaife install. I'm not too worried about it, nor can I really check, as the car's too damn low to get under it while level unless I put the ass end on an incline and jack the front up to match.

Please also see the new post I'm about to type up... Some thoughts and questions at T+5 days...

No need to jack the rear ust put in 2qts for post 2000 and 2.5 wts for pre 2000 and call it good. I blew my seal 6000 miles after it had been overfilled. Mine started dry as well. No biggie might just save a trans seal is all.
