What I'm running - Kenwood KDC-x959, 2 Eclipse 12's powered by a 1/500 JL amp

Here's the story...I went to pick up my body kit and gutted the car, including the subs, so I took them out without touching anything else on the amp/headunit...I didn't know any better until I smelled something and realized the amp was overheating like crazy and I couldn't even touch it...so I took the fuse out. Tonight I reinstalled the system, I know everything is hooked up right...well I turned the car to ACC and what seemed like some static or something came out the subs very briefly...I have everything adjusted on the amp/headunit just as it was before I took the subs out so I think the problem is them...

I played a bass song and heard....no bass....I stuck my head in the trunk, and I can hear a super quiet buzzing/rumbling from the subs, but they won't get any louder and they certainly aren't hitting like usual...what is wrong? I am no good at any of this audio stuff...

sounds like you might have a short somewhere. Are your wires touching the body of the car somehow.

Nope, nothing touching... :(

that's unusual, but it still sounds like a short, i have had that happen before and it drove me crazy. your amp could also be shorted internally. You could test the current and voltage if you had a multimeter.

Yep thats what it sounds like to me....especially if you said your positive that nothing externally is shorted.....

You might have your subs out of phase, so one of them is pushing out while the other is pushing in, and they basically cancel each other out. Try switching the positive and negative speaker wires on one of the subs.

That would be about the sum of it all-

Tried the voltmeter thing...subs/amp are working fine, the shop I took it to says the only thing that they can think of is that the amp's output isn't working...taking it in at 10am tomorrow for an in-depth look at it...don't worry though the amp is under JL's warranty if it is busted :)

the problem --->>> amp's output was shot
the solution --->>> brand new amp from JL, gotta love warranties.

Kelly -- of course, you know that the reason the output on the amplifier was shot is because you removed the subwoofers, had the system on and the speaker wires connected to the amplifier shorted out (either touching each other or both touching a common piece of metal). It's a valuable lesson to learn -- and next time you could at least pull the fuse from the amplifier to keep from having this problem in the future.

Glad to hear that you got the amplifier replaced under warranty. That's only a guarantee when you're dealing with a reputable brick&mortar dealer.....

Keane
