View Full Version : My car is "chocking" after 3000 RPMs... WTF!!!

Well,
As the title says, every time (8 out of 10) I push the gas all the way, and my rpms are above 3000 my car seems to be chocking, and it shakes...
If I could say it would be like it: a) is not getting enough air; b) not getting the fuel.
Anyone had this happen? Any ideas?
I already checked the intake and it is clean and unobstructed, its been around 80 degrees here, so it can't be heat...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Gus.

*cough*fuel pump*cough*
Same thing has been happening to me for a year. Check and see if it does this on a full tank of gas.

Did it only happen to you on a low tank???

half a tank and under for me. if it gets under 1/4th of a tank its like twice as bad.

Thanks dude.
Did you get a new pump or did you clean it (is that even posssible??)?

I haven't gotten one yet, but I'm planning on really soon. I don't think you can clean it because it actually starts to fry I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong). From www.batinc.net you can order a new one for ~$75 and install it yourself. There have been a few people who have done it recently and have how-to's and pictures on how to do it. Check the general info forum or try searching the site and you'll probably come up with more info.

Ive had the same problem usually around 1/4 tank of gas, and I was wondering whats going on. Also dont let your car sit for more than week, I recently left it go for a week when I was at the shore and it had hard core trouble starting until I was able to get gas in it. O well I guess a new fuel pump is in my future soon also. How hard is this to change and is there a link to the how to if there is one? Thanks alot guys

Not sure how hard it is to change it... searching the how-to section is your best shot.
I'm going to wait till I have money to get stuff done.

Your car is out of warrenty?

Like they said, this shouts fuel problem. Your secondaries open up at 3000, so you suddenly get plenty more air. Since this is when it starts giving you problems it must be the fuel, b/c that is the only alternative that would be related to the opening of the secondaries. You need a new fuel pump, totally. But, to be cheep, first replace the fuel filter and run some injector cleaner through the gas tank and see if this fixes your problem, then if it doesn't go for the pump.

Fuel pump, clogged pre-cats, or bad IMRC.
Time to start doing some testing...

No I'm not out of warrenty, but those f*$#ers always find a way to charge me up the booty...
Yes I guess its time to start testing it out. Question: How do I know if it is the IMRC? Cause I only have 20300 miles on the car, and doesn't it seem unlikely that the precats would already be clogged? It can always be the filter. Well time to see.
Thanks for the help guys.

What I love about my dealership is that when I told them about the problem, they ran the tests and said my fuel pump was working fine and that my car was completely normal  . Well the thing is it only acts up sometimes... Their tests found no problems but they still couldn't explain why my car was running like **** (my car is still under an extended warrenty). I'm gonna take it back this weekend and bug them about it some more, if that doesn't work I'll do the damn thing by myself.

Koochie,
That's the same problem I have. Everytime I tried to show someone, and the one time I took it to the dealership and mentioned it, NOTHING HAPPENS!!!
Murphy's Law sucks, doesn't it?
Well I'll try them again within a couple weeks... we'll see.

Well at least they are not trying to blame it on your power distro box like they are with me

Yeah this sucks, got my car in feb of 01 and by dec 01 fuel pump was out. By dec 02 the second one was out. The dealer covered both of them, but now the 3rd is going out again. You have got to be kidding me! So now I think I am just going to spend some money and get a quality pump.

If you decide to show them the car again, run the car well past 3000 rpm under heavy acceleration and do this through as many gears as you can.... The problem will resurface if its the fuel pump.
If the dealership constantly gives you problems, try another one. I currently have my Coug in a Ford dealership that's SVT certified and they've treated me well so far.
here's a link to a "how-to" on replacing a fuel pump in a contour SVT... I think its pretty similar to replacing the cougar's.
http://www.contour.org/mods/mods.php?s=howto&displayid=39
If yer car is under warranty though... and you don't want to put in an aftermarket (walbro), then just have the dealership do it otherwise the dealership might give you more problems the next time it desides to clog up or burn out.

Talked to the dealer yesterday, and they are telling me that the problem comes from sucking up dirty fuel. That when you get lower then a .25 tank, you pick up dirt in your fuel tank from cheap gas and such. Sorry but I don't have time to explain more, respond if you know what I am talking about.

It's most likely your fuel filter... change that first, see if it makes a difference -- it's the cheapest way to test to make sure it's nothing serious, and you really should do it every 15k-20k miles, anyway.

I changed my filter and it put off the problem for a couple thousand miles but now it's back. Stupid fuel pump... :disgust: Time to look into a Walbro..

Aren't there some issues with installing the walbro pump?

Sure it's not just because you're using crap gas... or running the tank lower than 1/8?

thats the dealerships way of saying
"our fuel pump sucks, but we're gonna blame it on you"
Don't let them do that. Make them replace it. Your fuel pump filter is most likely clogged.

I always buy gas at the same station (a fully upgraded Sunoco) and rarely run the tank below 1/4. The problem I was having was consistant before I changed the filter and completly disappeared after I changed the filter. But it has since returned (about 3,000 miles later) and I fear that a simple filter change won't fix it this time. Is there anybody out there running a Walbro with a return style??
My car does the same thing and the dealership told me that it was the 02 sensors, because the car was throwing check engine lights. After changing all those the problem wasn't fixed. then they said they thought that it was my plugs, so those went too. Now they say that it is the plug wires. I've brought up the fuel pump idea and they said they tested it and it looked fine. Are check engine lights usually assosiated with a fuel pump that is going out?

mine, ofcourse, has the same problem. a month after i bought it the 1st one went out. now the second one is going out.........where the hell can i get a quality fuel pump? yes, i've changed everything else and it only seems to make it a little better but not really. the only way to fix it is to spend the money and get a good fuel pump.

Its my second Cougar I had a 99 and now a 2001 both manual and both have that same problem. It looks like if there was a dead spot around 3300rpm. I always had the impression that this car had a "breading"problem. After I've made that mod with resistors in series I think it's on the m a p sensor the problem went about half of what it was but is still there.
Any solutions would be welcome !

Try the filter change again.. that Sunoco may not be as "clean" as you think.. Some major oil companies don't have as good a gas delivery system as you may think.. Something is getting into the tank to foul up the filter..
