View Full Version : Testing your secondaries...

This was buried in my problem thread in General Info...
I wanted to test to make sure my secondaries were opening, I couldn't visibly see the cable that I've see photos of that open the butterflies so I opened the box (forget the name) on the valve cover. Had the car running & I was revving by way of the TB. I didn't see the gears move, but I wasn't sure if the car needed to be in drive for it to work.
I did notice a slight brown spot on the circut board, almost looks like a burn. But it could also be something else.

You're talking about the IMRC box? I believe if you have an automatic the car needs to be in drive to see the gears opening up the secondaries.

not to be negitive but the secondaires will open without the car being in gear. I have dont it a bunch of times. it u take the imrc apart and pull the little electric motor out and bounce the car off of the rev limmiter the motor will spin. if not u have a prob. if not off the rev limmiter then above the 3500rpm or what ever it is. if it does not spin then it is messed up. try to spin the motor a few times by hand first. after a long period of time the brushes get burnt and stop working . if u knock off some of the build up then it may work.

Thanks, I revved to what I thought was 3-3500rpms but it didn't move at all. And I have no pull after 3k so I'm hoping it's related to my misfire....
Guess I'll find out tomorrow when I put new plugs in.... :( Fun! One more thing to buy & fix!

if you do this mod (http://atomicinternet.homeip.net/newmcneco/how-to_secondary-switch.asp) it is a SURE fire way to know if they are opening and when

when i thought my secondaries were sticking shut once, i did that exact same thing. i found that i had to rev to damn near redline at almost WOT when in neutral in order to get them to open.

once you have the lil electric motor pulled out....
spin it by hand 40 times in each direction
this will help to clean the insides...
also clean it with electrical parts cleaner.

You can visibly see the IMRC open at 4100rpm regardless of throttle position. If they are not opening by then there is something else wrong!
If you quickly move the throttle linkage to full open it reduces the rpm needed to 3700rpm.
ATX folks can test them as well. This is why the ATX limiter is just a hair above 4000rpm. (Don't have the exact rpm from the code handy as I don't pay too much attention to the slush box code ;) )
Yes these rpm points are for the regular Duratec.
The SVT has the following code: 3400rpm at WOT, 3500rpm at "roughly" 1/2 throttle, 3700rpm at "roughly" 1/4 throttle, and the same 4100rpm always open.
