I have a rattle from the engine on start up from cold only, and wondered if anyone else has had this problem. I rang fords technical helpline who suggested the oil filter may be the fault but I have changed it and I am using the ford grade of oil and its still there. It only lasts for a second or two but its bugging me once warm it never happens

Might want to try a better quality oil such as Mobil 1 that may protect the engine a bit more from start up??
The cougar is fitted with Hydraulic Tappets so yes you will get a rattle from them when the engine is cold untill the oil pressure builds up, i have the same noise for about a second so i would not worry.
