I want to buy a dual exhaust, but i wanted to know if its really worth it to spend the extra 200 for a stainless steel kit, rather than an aluminized one, i was just wondering if anyone had any opinions....
thanks

The difference is the amount of time you plan for the exhaust to last. Being in New York, you have winters and the aluminized one will roughly last you 1-3 years (could be more or less, but odds state around 2 years, give or take a year). Stainless steel exhaust should outlast the car.

That is exactly right. Stainless *will* last longer than the car, and you should not skimp on the 200 bucks to get aluminized right away. If you can't afford it right now, just keep saving - you'll regret it if you don't. Take it from someone who knows from experience - I used to live in Syracuse. I give you 2 winters AT MOST on an aluminized setup.

aren't the stock exhausts aluminized? They last longer then 2 years...

stock exhausts are aluminized, so i think if i just took the exhaust off for the winter that would give it a lot more life, and since it is bolt on it shouldn't be that hard, then i can just throw the stock exhaust back on for the winter, and change them again in the spring.

Going to the track or autox or road racing? Then Get the LIGHTEST SINGLE pipe you can! If not and you are going to keep the car over 4 years, then go SS.. Anything in between, flip a coin! Let us know what you decide!

I think i'll probably end up getting aluminized, only because my uncle owns a shop and it would be very easy for me to take off the kit in the winter, SS would be nice but i'm on a very tight budget because of car payments and rent:banghead:

I don't think you have to worry about anything...stock aluminum exhausts last pretty long, regardless of what people may say.

if aluminum was so bad why would they put it on all cars stock? i know stock parts suck, but they do have to pass the lemon law test.

The stock exhaust is 409 stainless... and the stock manifolds are tubular 18 Cr-Cb, one of the stongest and most corrosion-resistent grades of ferritic stainless steel.

The stock exhaust should last for at least 10 years. In fact, most cars nowadays come with "low-grade" stainless steel exhausts from the factory. Not that I have any trace of the factory exhaust on my car... but it isn't exactly junk either.

To answer the original poster... unless you're sure you're sure you're going to be 100% satisfied with the exhaust you buy, don't bother with stainless. 3 times out of 4, you won't be perfectly satisfied with the first aftermarket exhaust you put on your car, and it will either get modified or sold within the first year that it's on your car. Also consider that most muffler shops are not even equipped to properly handle stainless exhausts. They don't typically have the right stuff to weld them, and stainless is a challenge to clamp without leaks. Don't get me wrong, I like mine... finally - but all in all, I don't think it was necessary.

So.. for example... if you know you want quiet, and will always want quiet, you could probably buy a stainless Borla and be done with it... but if you're buying a TruBendz... chances are decent that you will have trouble deciding just how loud is "too loud" at first and will want to make some changes at some point.

i would go with the ss, better life, especially if u have harsh winters. i have the dual borlas on mine, and i luv em, easy install, dependable, last a life time. wouldnt trade it for the world, and well worth the extra cash. cheaper to bye 1 ss than to replace the aluminumized one.
