View Full Version : Curious about something... engine & shifting related

ok, so i'm driving home tonight, no one else was on the road, so i was having a little fun, being a bit heavier on the gas and stuff like that, and anyways, i'm just about home, slowing down to yeild to the right.
I downshift into second and as i'm exiting the turn, i shift into third and floor the gas... now, the rev's shot up like a byotch (as if the car wasn't even in gear) when the rpms got to 6k i thought "oops, musta missed that gear" so i shifted into 4th... same deal, rpms went up, but no acceleration...
I had to press the brakes to slow down a bit, then shift back to 2nd, and the gears 'caught' and then it was back to driving normally.
i havent done it before... well, in video games i have. heh!
Now... i know its something that I DID... i made the car do that cause i didn't shift it properly or something,
but my question is... WHY does that happen? maybe someone could give me a quick engine lesson :)

Possibly the synchros didnt catch. Were u going around the turn pretty fast when u shifted? Alot of body roll?
if the synchros didnt catch it would have grinded.
was the gear selector all the way into the gear?
perhaps the clutch was slipping.

When you do have the car in gear...is there alot of play in the shifter?? If so, you might have to tighten some nuts up.
I would expect this behaviour with a mechanical shift linkage, but we have cable linkages. I used to get this all the time in my Escort GT... Damn gearshift lever would buck itself right out of gear during hard cornering... Almost miss that car...
Anyway, it sounds like the gear wasn't fully engaged. Synchros are meant to not let you into gear if the result would be excessive RPMs... Not sure.

this question should be asked in Problems really....

ye, sorry Doug, I didn't think it was really a "Problem" though, since i know that it was something i did on purpose
anyway,
yes - i was going around the corner pretty fast, but not fast enough to loose traction - probably 30mph give or take...
I was 100% totally in gear... infact, when it didn't 'catch' i shifted into neutral, then BACK into 3rd, but still nothing... for a split second, i thought my transmission had broken or something... the car was just reving, but not moving.
the Shifter was installed about 3 weeks ago, i drove to Windsor and back, then to Indianapolis for the cougar show and back, no problems - everything is as tight as it needs to be.
sounds like what Dan G said actually... cause i was IN GEAR, but it wasn't doing anything, just empty rev's
heh, i'm not going to try it again, i jjust couldn't think of a reason why that would have happend
its almost like i pushed the gas down too far BEFORE i let go of the clutch...
omg... i think thats it, would that make sence? if i clutched in, shifted to 3rd, but pressed the gas too hard before letting go of the clutch, and the gears just couldn't 'syncronise' themselfs to get going?

Hey,
That could be clutch slippage. Clutch slippage is more likely to occur in higher gears than lower gears. Take it out and smoothly to about 3500 in 5th, then let off for a sec, then romp on it. The engine torque may break free and if the problem is duplicatable that way, it's clutch time.
Massiv.
P.S. I had this before on my old five liter.
