Yes I am a newbie, and yes I have used the search function and read at least 50 threads on this but none seem to solve my issue. I have a 2001 2.5L Cougar, for my first mod I decided to go and get my exhaust done. My setup is pretty typical Magnaflow 4" round muffler (located after the converter) with 2.5" inlet/outlet, all the piping is 2.5" splitting into duals after the rear wheels (same as yodude/trubendz)
I am aware that the computer must be reset to learn air/fuel ratios with a bigger exhaust. Since then my check engine light came on, so I reset the system again and then after 2 days it came back on and has not turned off. I have checked the fuel filter/o2 sensor connections/vacuum lines....everything is ok.

Is it maybe because I have chosen to run 2.5" piping, I know of 3 other people who have 2.5" piping and have had no problems. (they are 99's and 2000 though) Anyone have any other suggestions for what might be causing this. BTW the vehicle ran perfect and had no issues before the exhaust, and even though the engine light is on now the car still runs smooth at any RPM range.

HEEELLPP!

Get it diagnosed at Autozone to find out what the problem is.

exactly, you need to know what code your CEL is being pulled by to understand the problem

AutoTap (http://www.autotap.com) offers a solution

I'd say it's not related to the new pipes, per se- probably all that action screwed one of your oxygen sensors, beating on the system and shaking it around like it did.

Autozone, my friend. I predict a new O2 sensor in your future...

Well I guess I will have to get it diag. at Ford since I live in Toronto Canada and there are no Autozones around. I guess I might think of purchasing a new o2 sensor to eliminate that area. Hope thats it....I guess I am sort of glad its not the 2.5" pipes, since they look so good and I just put money out for them.
Anyone know where to buy a OBDII scanner tool in Canada, preferably Toronto surrounding area?
Thanks

who cares if you can buy it local? just get it over the internet.

but yes I have seen them on the shelf at CT or perhasp an auto store. usually they are a little less advanced than an autotap but they will let you pull a code

and don't go to the ford dealer... i'm sure there are auto stores in TO which will pull it for you (for free, ford charges like $100. your a sucker if you go there)

Well I took some advice from my fellow Cougar owners and purchased a "EQUUS" OBD II Code Reader. I pulled a P0402 code (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Excessive Detected) basically the EGR valve is stuck open/dirty/clogged or the solenoid/controller is not controlling it. I did a search and found that one of the members "Neil" had this code also, he fixed it by purchasing a DPFE sensor. Over at the CEG board one of the members also had this code and corrected it simply by cleaning the EGR valve near the throttle body. Can anyone please post pics and procedures for cleaning the EGR valve and for replacing the DPFE sensor.......thanks alot

Well its 1 month later and I still have the same CEL, I rechecked all the vacuum lines, O2 wires, cleaned the throttle body and the egr passages but still my CEL comes on. (I unpluged the negative battery cable for 20 minutes to reset the computer). Can the EGR valve be cleaned? I guess everything is pointing to the DPFE sensor thing, can some please post an image of the engine bay and its location. I got this part number from the CEG board used on a 2000 contour, is it the same? (2F1Z-9J460-AA). Oh yah are there aftermarket DPFE units, if so are they better then Ford's?

the current CEL is P0402 (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Excessive Detected)

Thanx
