View Full Version : How much of a difference does a hood make?

Im not sure exactly which forum this belonged in, but Ill give it a shot here. But since the hot summer is quickly approaching a lot of us will probably expierience heat soak with our intakes. This summer will be the first summer that Ive had my Predator hood on. Has anyone tested the hood to see how much heat is let out through the vents? I notice on cooler mornings and warm afternoons that extreme amounts of heat waves spew out of my hood, im guessing this is good since its not under neath the hood. But how much will the hood prevent heat soak?

Thanks

George

Hmmm...My guess is ANY hood with venting capabilities (wether it be a cowl-induction hood or something like yours) will be helpful in reducing heatsoak. (Anything to aid in removing hot air from under the hood.) If you live in a REALLY HOT climate like me, you might want to consider the Weapon-R CAB and ram-air kit. I ran just my Injen intake for like a year and in the summer it was REALLY BAD (heatsoak, that is)...When I added the CAB & ram-air that problem went away.

SOmeone else needs to make a cold air box, cause when I finish paying these seats off, I plan on getting a intake, put I'm kinda scared of anything made by Weapon R.

just do what i did and toss the filter to the weapon r in the closet and put a k&n filter on. just as good as any other intake then

i'll make one up tonight. I needed something to do anyways. I'll make the ram air box a little bigger than the weapon r and make it fit the cougars. i'll post tomorrow night with some pictures.

This post has gone and taken a complete 180 lol. I know about the cold air box but I really dont want that. I was just wondering if someone has had expierience with the predator or any vented hood in the summer time and if that made a difference in any way.

doesn't the heat from the engine reach the filter and the intake before it reaches the vents in the hood?

George,
You HAVE a predator hood...drive around this summer and see if it makes a difference! ;) Haha!

without a good intake I doubt it would do that much, I am sure that it would be a little helpfull but there will still be the hot air from the engine being pulled in from right next to your stock intake

lol i know, but i was pondering the thought of putting my stock airbox back on, last summer was absolutely a nightmare :(

i feel kinda stupid asking this , but, does more heat come from the headers or the manifold  if its the headers, the vents would allow the heat to escape more rapidly ...but if its the manifold a Kaminairi hood would be more effective

That one's really easy...THE HEADERS!!! The intake isn't actually producing ANY heat...The manifold is actually nothing more than tubes through which air flows into the engine. The only reason it gets warm at all is because it's bolted to the engine. The VERY HOT exhaust gases from the engine pass through the headers on their way out the back of the exhaust tips. Actually no heat is PROUCED by the headers either; the heat is produced by the combustion going on within the engine, but the headers get much hotter than the manifold. If you really want to see which ones are producing more heat, drive around for about half an hour and then open your hood...put your hand on the intake manifold, and then put your hand on the headers! (BTW...I'm JOKING here DO NOT touch the headers!!!) My point is you could touch the manifold and not burn your hand...if you touched the headers, you'd be on your way to the emergency room shortly thereafter.

what if i put my tongue on the headers?

i guess your right though, ill probably just wait till its like 100 degrees outside and drive around. :( i remember last summer, on the highway , stuck in traffic, I STOMP on the gas and i just sat there for a couple seconds

to answer your question DGNZCOUG,

Yes your vented hood will help Greatly in reducing heatsoak. LOL you answered for youself when you saw ALL that Heat Pouring through those vents.

where does all that heat go with a stock hood? Nowhere! oh wait! The Intake Sucks it all in.

The point i > the stock or non vented hood will trap all the heat in. kinda like an Oven.

which is lighter.....carbon-fiber...or fiberglass??

carbon fiber... but not by too much :)

i think a fiberglass kaminari hood = 16lbs
a carbon fiber one = 12lbs

this is why race cars go for C.F. - its lighter, and stronger.

which leads to the next question... how much does the stock hood weigh? I don't think I've ever found an answer to that.

Not only does putting in a lighter hood reduce the weight of the car, it also improves the front-rear balance of the car by a not insignificant amount. That said, there's still another few hundred pounds to remove from the front or move to the rear to get a 50/50 balance.. bah, it's probably not even possible on the Cougar without adding new weight to the back.

i think the stock weighs 52 pounds or something like that.

theres a guy in COOGA that has a reinforced stock hood, and it takes all of my muscle to lift his damn hood

why in the hell would you want to reinforce your stock hood?!!

cause some people are weird  - nah, im sure there is a good reason.

and yeah, the stock cougar hood weighs 42lbs i think - its a heavy mofo compared to ANY other aftermarket hood for the cougar.

put on a lighter hood, and swap out the factory seats (the power-driver seat alone weighs in at over 50lbs)
(my seats only weigh like... 25lbs each) and you're on your way to minor weight reduction!

Like doing a photo shoot with a pair of BBW's posing on the hood?

Besides fiberglass quarter panels, we could also drive butt-naked for an extra few pounds of loss!

But seriously.. anything I do to the car, I like to take weight into consideration if possible. Cuz if you're going to net 5hp, it kinda sucks to have half of the gain eaten by a having more weight to accelerate! That said, I've hardly done anything to my car... I wanna start doing auto-x and G-Stock really doesn't allow many mods... in fact, i'd have to undo all my changes to run in GS. :( But I think (?) seats are a legal change, and one of them fancy racing harnesses makes a huge difference in staying in your seat, so I hear. :)
Bah, the only event in San Diego in the next few months coincides with me being out of town!
