Those should be fine. Several members have gone to 225/50R16 because there is a greater selection in that size.

Some notes on tires/tyres. The OEM 215's were/are only available from BF Goodrich or Firestone. 225's are available from many brands. The US models, and I assume most exports used the same tire, which is an 'all season' tire/tyre. Choose an all-season tire/tyre, if all-season capabilities are important, ie: need to drive in snow, ice and you use the car year round as a daily driver, and don't want a second set of tires/wheels. I know you may get some snow, ice in your area of the UK, but if it isn't a problem, then you have a wider range of tires, often with competitive pricing. Check the Tire & Wheels section of the boards as well as do a search in the UK Neco section.

my 225/50/16 racing tires rub (kumho victoracers)
my 225/50/16 street tires don't (kumho escta 712s)
Different manufactures have slightly different sizing sometimes.

Interestingly, BF Goodrich and Firestone are not readily available in UK at all. There are a couple of places import them but to be honest, they are not so well suited to UK roads.
Here the Cougs came with 215/50VR16 Michelin's as standard and for a long time the only real alternative was Pirelli P800s. I got a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE010's a year ago and in my view these are the best tyre you can get in 215/50VR16 - very high traction/great cornering - a bit expensive tho (shame they are currently in my garage as I'm running 17's these days). Nowadays there are a few more alternatives in 215/50 16 - Uniroyal Rainsport and Kumho Ecsta and so on.
